RedTail Softball Season Comes to an End

The RedTail Softball Team ended their season competing in the Region XI-B Conference Tournament on May 5th. The RedTails faced Iowa Lakes Community College in the elimination game and lost 15-7 in five innings.

Iowa Lakes scored in the first inning to take the early lead. They scored two runs on a walk and two singles.

The Lakers tacked on four more runs in the second inning to take a 6-0 early lead. They scored on a walk, double, RedTail error, and single.

The RedTails chipped away at the deficit and scored two runs in the third inning. Dailyn Marine started the inning with a walk and Kisha Reed hit a hard ground ball to force a Laker error. They both advanced on a hard hit by Caydance Sharp. Lizzy Hamand hit a single to score both Marine and Reed.

Iowa Lakes pushed back and had a big third inning. They scored seven runs off of a double, homerun, three walks, a RedTail error, and grandslam.

Hawkeye responded in the top of the fourth when Dharma Woodruff hit her first homerun of the game, making the score 13-3 in favor of Iowa Lakes.

The RedTails fought to keep the game alive in the top of the fifth inning. Reed led the inning with a walk, but was forced out in a fielder's choice. Hamand hit her second single of the day putting runners on first and second. Chardonnay Hubert then singled to score Sharp. Down to their last out, Woodruff hit a three run homerun to keep the game within reach.

Going into the bottom of the fifth, the score was 13-7, with the RedTails trailing. Unfortunately, the RedTails were unable to stop the bleeding and allowed two runs to score to end the game in the fifth inning, losing 15-7.

Hawkeye was led by Woodruff who was 2-3 with two homeruns, two runs scored, and four runs batted in. Hamand also had two hits on the day with one run scored. Sidney Schafer took the loss on the mound, going 2.2 innings, giving up seven hits, five earned runs, three walks, and three strikeouts. Courtney Hemsley also pitched two innings, giving up just one hit, four earned runs, four walks, and two strikeouts.

"Although the game didn't turn out the way we wanted, I am proud of these girls for fighting their way to stay in the game. They made some good plays, saw the ball well at the plate, and some things just didn't fall our way today. I am proud of this team and how far they came from the beginning of the year. Big things to come for the future," commented Coach Calkins.
