NORFOLK, Neb. – The Northeast Community College softball team returned to Ta-Ha-Zouka Park in Norfolk Saturday for a doubleheader with No. 20 Iowa Lakes Community College. The Lakers took Game 1 by a final score of 9-1 and were victorious 12-5 in Game 2.
The Hawks (5-11, 0-6 ICCAC) were led on offense in both showdowns by Ellie Schwede (Norfolk, Neb.) as the sophomore was dominant each and every time she came to the plate. Northeast only had one hit in the first contest, but that knock was in the form on a homer from Schwede.
In Game 2 Schwede hit a double all the way to the wall, blasted another home run, had a potential third bomb of the day robbed at the wall and recorded a loud out in her fifth plate appearance of the afternoon. The Hawks were up in the matchup until a huge sixth frame from the Lakers gave them the lead and a big enough cushion to sweep the day.
HEAR FROM THE HAWKS COACH:
Head softball coach Iris Woodhead on the huge day from Ellie Schwede:
"She saw the ball really well today," Woodhead said. "If she can continue to see the ball like that it is going to be a great year for her. It was a good rally maker for the team and they rallied behind her swings."
Woodhead on the key to getting some victories in the series tomorrow:
"Defense," Woodhead said. "We have to make the routine plays. Iowa Lakes is ranked 20th in the nation for a reason. I hate to compare them to sharks, but if you put a little bit of blood in the water they are going to attack. That's exactly what we saw in that sixth inning when we missed a ball at first base on a bunt. We put some blood in the water and they attacked us."
UP NEXT:
The Hawks will finish their series with Iowa Lakes Community College in a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. tomorrow at Ta-Ha-Zouka Park in Norfolk.
