Freshman Trevian Carson of Des Moines scored a team-high 17 points as the DMACC men's basketball team defeated Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC), 93-74, in a battle of ranked teams January 3 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

The Bears entered the game ranked fourth in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and ILCC is ranked eighth. The Bears improved to 14-1 overall and stayed unbeaten in Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play at 5-0 with their seventh straight win. The loss dropped ILCC to 11-4 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

Sophomores Angelo Winkel of Algona and James Glenn of Altoona helped DMACC's cause with 16 points apiece and sophomore Trey Lewis of Johnston and freshman Da'Shon Fisher of Iowa City scored 13 and 10 points respectively.

DMACC led 45-33 at halftime and put the game out of reach behind a 12-2 run midway through the second half. ILCC opened the half by outscoring the Bears 11-3 in the first three minutes of the half to trail 48-44. The Lakers were behind 58-50 when freshman Ethan Thomas of Greenfield, Wis., hit a jump shot to ignite the DMACC run. Carson's three-pointer gave the Bears a 15-point advantage at 65-50 and a layup by Fisher gave DMACC its only 20-point lead of the game at 72-52 with 6 minutes, 40 seconds to play. ILCC got no closer than 13 points the rest of the way.

The Bears shot 53 percent with 31 field goals from 59 attempts. They were 9-of-19 from three-point range and 22-of-26 from the free throw line.

Carson and Winkel picked up double-doubles with 12 and 10 rebounds respectively as DMACC came away with a 43-42 advantage on the boards. Sophomores Elijah Thomas of Surprise, Ariz., and Victor Desmond of Onalaska, Wis., had five rebounds apiece and Lewis dished out a team-high seven assists. Carson topped DMACC in steals with three.

The DMACC men's basketball team will face another ranked team in Ellsworth Community College (ECC) Jan. 6 at Iowa Falls. The Panthers, ranked seventh in NJCAA Division II, are 13-2 overall and are also undefeated in the ICCAC at 5-0.
