The Lakers Host Defending National Champs Southwestern

Estherville, Iowa – Friday, February 9, 2018

The Spartans from Southwestern Community College will tip off against the Lakers on Saturday, February 10th at 3 PM. 

Earlier in the season, the Spartans defeated the Lakers in overtime in Creston 81-91.  Southwestern point guard, Khallid Edwards, made a 3 pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.  The Lakers had 3 players in double digits for points in that game.  Kyle Beisch scored 22 points, Nick Wagner had 19 points, and Christian Kyles finished the night with 12 points.

The Lakers are 16-7 overall while the Spartans are 19-5.  Both teams are 4-2 in the conference.  The game tomorrow would determine which team would take 2nd place within the conference.  When asked about the game, Head Coach Troy Larson, stated, "It's an important game for both teams in the Conference race as we each have 2 losses."

Last year, Iowa Lakes lost to Southwestern 95-96 in overtime during Hall of Fame weekend.  The Spartans made a 3 pointer from the corner in the last seconds of overtime to win.  Dennis Joiner led the Lakers in scoring with 22 points in that game.  Coach Larson said "We had some good battles over the last couple of years and expect the same on Saturday."

The Lakers are coming off a road victory against Little Priest Tribal College.  4 Lakers scored in double figures.  Dennis Joiner led the way with 21 points while shooting 7-11 from the floor.  Nick Wagner scored 19 points.  Kyle Beisch and Jacob Rau contributed 13 points each.  Rau shot 5-6 from the floor Wednesday night.

Iowa Lakes Women's Basketball will also tip off against Southwestern on Saturday, February 10th at 1:00 PM.  Iowa Lakes Community College will honor their Hall of Fame inductees at half time of the Women's Basketball game.
