Former Iowa Lakes Men's Basketball Graduate Assistant Jamison Montgomery associate head men's basketball coach at Menlo College in Atherton, California was named to the 2020 Under Armour 30 Under 30 Team. This annual recognition identifies 30 of the most outstanding men's college basketball coaches under the age of 30.
Montgomery has been at Menlo for the past 4 seasons. During that time their team GPA has been 3.0 or higher. Two years ago they completed their first 20 win season in the past 30 years. This year they finished 19-9 and were selected for the NAIA DI tournament for the first time ever. They finished the season ranked 19th in the country, but had been ranked as low as 16th during the season. Menlo had two All-Americans this past season. Montgomery helped to develop some of their scorers, one became their all-time leading scorer and another finished 4th on the all-time scoring list.
Montgomery worked as a graduate assistant under Troy Larson.
He values his time at Iowa Lakes and the impact it had on his coaching career, "The GA program was a great experience, it really shows you how much a passion you have for coaching and helping your players get better on and off the court. I learned the ins and outs of practice, preparation, traveling, recruiting, game day set up, scouting, and film breakdown. Those things have prepared me into the coach I am today,"
Montgomery also appreciated the college and community at Iowa Lakes, "Iowa Lakes is a great program. It is a special place with great coaches, faculty, staff, and an amazing community. I was able to help players from all across the country at Iowa Lakes, especially from my hometown in Milwaukee, WI. I really want to thank Coach Larson. He is a great coach, fierce competitor, and an even better human being. I appreciate him and Coach McKinney for helping me start my college coaching career. I will always be apart of the family here at Iowa Lakes Community College. Go Lakers!"
Head Coach Troy Larson is so proud to see how much Montgomery has accomplished. Larson knew that Montgomery had big things ahead when he left Iowa Lakes. While he was at Iowa Lakes he helped the team earn in the top seed in the conference tournament and play in the regional tournament championship game.
Larson commented about Montgomery, "Very special honor for Jamison to be named on the 30 under 30 list. Very hard working coach. While at Iowa Lakes, Jamison was an outstanding recruiter and had great relationships with our players. He understood how to motivate student athletes. He also has a great basketball mind and feel for the game. Most importantly, Jamison is an outstanding individual with great character and is a good role model for student athletes. Very proud of him and anxious to further follow his career."
