Lakers Take 2nd at Spring Regional Preview

The Iowa Lakes men's golf team traveled to Ames, Iowa for the Spring Regional Preview at Veenker Memorial Golf Course. Due to a less than ideal forecast filled with rain and thunderstorms a few of the regional teams chose not to participate. With a little bit of luck the event went off without any delays and the Lakers were able to take second with a team score of 319, 19 strokes behind Kirkwood Community College with a 300.

The Lakers were led by Matt Bennett who carded a four over 76, which was good for a tie for 5th individually, and Jordan Henry with a seven over 79. Other counting scores for the Lakers were Jack Brashear with an 80 and Jacob Baker with an 84. Connor Anderson shot an 85 while Collin Kemper carded an 93 as an individual.

Coach Weber had this to say about the round. "Veenker is a very interesting and different type of golf course that we do not come across very often. It can be very difficult for somebody playing it for the first or even the second and third times to score well here. The golf course is not very long on paper but it can rarely be overpowered. It is instead more of a plotters course that requires more course management and incredible focus on each golf shot from tee to green to ensure that you do not put yourself in the wrong spots as you will pay heavy consequences if you do. It was good for the guys to get to see the course before regionals and get an idea of what they will need to do to compete here. We will sit down and talk a great deal of strategy but we will have another practice round before the regional tournament in May so the boys will be ready, I have no doubt about that."

The Lakers do not have much time to relax as their next tournament will be at the Mason City Country Club in Mason City, Iowa at the NIACC Spring Invitiational on Monday, April 17th. Play begins with a 10:30 AM shotgun.
