Laker Golf Sweeps Podiums In Season Opener

The Iowa Lakes Community College men's and women's golf teams began their 2019-20 campaigns in winning fashion by sweeping the podium at the Iowa Lakes Fall Invitational hosted at Brooks Golf Club in Okoboji, Iowa on Friday.

The Laker men were the low team of the day after posting a team score of 299, which was good enough for a seven shot victory over North Iowa Area Community College and an eight shot victory of Iowa Central Community College.

Leading the charge for the Laker's were freshman Dawson Weber and James Preston who carded rounds of one under 71 and even par 72, respectively and finished one-two individually in the event. Iowa Lakes head golf coach Jarvis Weber had this to say about his team's first tournament: "The team came out relaxed but very focused and intent on playing well today, and they took advantage of the beautiful playing conditions. Dawson and James showed up and really set the tone for the day with two very good rounds of golf, especially considering this was their first college action in their careers, and it was huge for this team to get the win."

On the ladies side, the team picked up right where they left off last season by carding a team score of 341, good enough for a 60 shot win over NIACC.

"We have three big returning sophomores this year with Abby, Alexia, and Erin, and we are going to lean on them for leadership and setting the tone this year. That being said, we have some very talented freshmen here who want to make some noise as well, so we have a very strong group of ladies here who are very focused and very determined to build on the success we had last year. I was very happy with the way we played today but we do have some things that need to be tightened up if they want to achieve the goals we have set thus far."

Leading the way for Iowa Lakes was women's medalist Erin Baum and second place finisher Abby Stender with scores of 83 and 84.

"Going out and defending your home turf with two good team wins over conference opponents is a great way to kick off the year and I couldn't be happier with the way both rosters performed today. We had some players slip a bit, but we had some players step up and perform and we are going to need that in order to keep improving and pushing towards our goals. We have a great group of kids who are building a great team culture, and we are only going to get better as the year goes on", added Coach Weber.

The Laker men and women will look to build on their early success when they head to Mason City, Iowa next Thursday, Sept. 12th to compete at the NIACC Fall Invitational with a 10:30am shotgun at the Mason City Country Club.
