Downing Leads Men, Ladies Struggle at Simpson
The Iowa Lakes men's and women's golf teams were back in action Wednesday at the Storm Invite hosted by Simpson College at the Indianola Country Club in Indianola, Iowa. The men were able to come away with a second place finish out of ten teams, while the women struggled and finished in a tie for fifth out of seven teams.
Leading the men to a team score of 301, one shot behind team champion Waldorf University, was freshman Conal Downing, who posted a one over par 72 which was good enough for a t-2nd place finish, one shot behind tournmanet medalist Kyle Willie from Iowa Central Community College. Rounding out other individual scores was James Preston with a 74, Dawson Weber with a 77, Trace Jacobson with a 78, and Joey Murphy with an 86. Luke Sladek competed as an individual and carded a round of 77.
"The guys came out and, for the most part, stuck to their gameplans. Indianola Country Club can be a tricky course to play the first time and I think they did a good job in managing their rounds, which is a good skill that they need to keep developing to help us get better individually, and as a team", said Iowa Lakes golf coach Jarvis Weber.
The Iowa Lakes women's golf team carded a team score of 375 with individual scores from Erin Baum, Tiger Tsosie, and Abby Stender with 93's and Alexia Kemper and Kelly Winter with 96's. Madilyn Shandorf competed as an individual and posted 109.
"Today was not our best day, but we have a team motto that as long as we learn from everything we do, we are moving in the right direction. The girls have a lot of things that they can take away from this round that will continue to keep making us better, even if the score today did not show that. I am very confident in this group and I think they will bounce back in a big way tomorrow at the RedTail Shootout in Waterloo." added Coach Weber.
The Laker men and women will tee it up on Thursday at noon at the RedTail Shootout at the South Hills Golf Course in Waterloo, Iowa hosted by Hawkeye Community College.
