Lakers Open Fall Season at Iowa Central

The Iowa Lakes men's and women's golf teams began their 2021-22 campaign with the Iowa Central Fall Kickoff on Monday. The Laker men would place fourth with a team score of 308 being led by freshman Ciaran Jones, while the second team would shoot 325 led by sophomore Sam Miller with a 76. Iowa Central Community College would win the event with a team score of 282. The Ladies would tie with Des Moines Area Community College with a score of 356. Sophomore Kelly Winter would tie for a first place finish with an 86.

"It was good to get back out and compete, especially after the long and tiring year everybody had last year." said Iowa Lakes golf coach Jarvis Weber. "We are all excited to get back to competing and having things back to normal around campus and at tournaments."

Freshman Kendall Nicolai posted a 77, sophomore Jake Hemann a 78, and freshman William Lyons posted a 79 to round out the first team score. Non counting score of 81 was posted by freshman Dylan Shepherd.

"We have a lot of new faces on the roster this year and some good sophmore leadership, which is a great combination. We have plenty of swing talent on this team, no question about that. Today was all about getting our feet wet and setting a baseline to move forward from." added Coach Weber.

Other scores for the second team was sophomore Ben Tibken with an 81, freshman Andrew Johnson with an 84, sophomore Blake Johnson with an 84 and freshman Brandon Brunsvold with a 95.

For the ladies, sophomores Abby Gaudian and Isabella Santistevan were not far behind their teammate with rounds of 87 and 88. Freshman Paige Wieck would post a round of 95 and freshman Carli Gebel a 99.

"This group has a lot of returning talent with three national qualifiers in our sophomore group. Today was a good start for the season with plenty of room to improve and that is where we will be spending most of our time." said Coach Weber.

"Kris Graewin has assembled an impressive roster down at Iowa Central this year, and today it showed. They are one of the best teams in the country and will be competing for a national title this year, and today was a great day for our guys to see what it is going to take to be successful at this level. We have a lot of work to do to keep up with our impressive region and Iowa Central, but we have the swing talent to do it. Hopefully this makes our team hungrier and more focused to get to where we want to be. The ladies have a lot more left in the tank, that's for sure. This is a focused group that wants to build on last years nationals trip, and I have no doubt that they will get there with the hard work and dedication they have already shown in two short weeks. I am excited for this season, should be a fun ride."

The Lakers will look to head back to the links next Tuesday at the North Iowa Area Community College Fall Invite in Mason City, Iowa at the Mason City Country Club.
