Lakers defeat Iowa Western 2-1, first time in program history.

 

Spencer, Iowa-

The Iowa Lakes Lakers defeated the Iowa Western Revivers 2-1, in a tough Region XI battle. The Lakers hosted the Revivers who came into the game (5-4-1) and (2-2) in conference play. The Lakers were looking to bounce back after a tough 2-1 loss to Region XI opponent Marshalltown on Saturday.

The Lakers would start off the game trailing 1-0 to the Revivers in the 13th minute when a Western player go his head on the end of a corner kick. Twenty minutes later, the Lakers would respond when Freshmen Cameron Weston played a ball on top of the Western box to Brazilian Luan Cesar, who took a touch and ripped a shot into the bottom left corner of the Revivers goal. This would give Cesar his fourth goal on the season and Weston's fourth assist. The Lakers and Revivers would head into halftime all tied up.

The game would start to turn to the Lakers favor as they constantly created chances in front of the Western net but could not find a finish. That all would change when Sophomore Nicolas Likulia would be taken down in the Western box awarding the Lakers with a penalty kick in the 80th minute. Likulia would step up and successfully convert the penalty kick, keeping his perfect penalty kick record of 3-3 and moving him to eight goals on the year.

The end of the game got a little nasty, as two Iowa Western players where sent off with red cards in the last minute, Suring up the Laker win. This is the first win against the Revivers in Iowa Lakes History. The Lakers now ranked #19 in the national rankings move to (11-2-1) on the year and (6-1) in conference play. The Lakers last three games will all be at home. As they host NIACC on Saturday, October 6th at 5:00pm.

Thoughts from Head Coach Ben MacRae, "I thought our guys played really well in the first half and deserved a little more out of it. Some of the combination play was fantastic. In the second half we had to dig in and fight for the result, and I think we thoroughly   deserved the win today against western."
