Lakers Defeat Iowa Western 2-1 To Become District Champs

Iowa Lakes Men's Soccer headed to Council Bluffs over the weekend to play in the Midwest District Championship tournament.

On Friday, The Lakers faced off against Jefferson College and showed great determination to come back from 0-1 to win 2-1. A first-half goal from Sofian Maghouz leveled the game. Logan Roach then found the game-winner in the second half.

The Lakers followed up the performance with a 2-1 win over #2 nationally ranked Iowa Western on Sunday. An early first-half goal by Jason Dyer from a cross by Lewis Nohar put the Lakers up 1-0. Iowa Western equalized after receiving a penalty kick in the first half from a foul in the box. The game then went deep into the second period of overtime, where freshman Jorge Pena played a beautifully weighted pass into the path of Aphelele Nzwanga, who slotted it past the onrushing goalkeeper to give The Lakers the walk-off win.

Being crowned Champions of NJCAA Men's Division 1 Midwest conference, The Lakers receive automatic birth into the National Championship tournament, which kicks off on November 15.
