Iowa Lakes Defeats Southeastern 7-3 in Thrilling Conference Opener

Iowa Lakes Men's Soccer hosted #9 Southeastern on Saturday, opening conference play with a 7-3 victory. The scoring started in the 3rd minute, where some good combination play amongst the Lakers isolated Francis Motsi on the right flank, who got the better of his defender and set up Gabriel Miranda for the strike on goal. Just minutes later, Southeastern struck the underside of the crossbar, followed by a massive save by Yuta Hirano on the rebound shot. However, the linesman awarded Southeastern with a goal for the shot that hit the crossbar on a significantly delayed response. The Lakers responded swiftly when Garbhan Feeney picked the ball up off Matheus Loreto and played Philmour Virgo in for the goal. Southeastern responded again with a goal of their own just a minute later. Iowa Lakes then retook the lead when Matheus Loreto scored a beauty of a free kick, bending the ball around the bottom corner of the Southeastern wall to put it past their keeper. However, Southeastern responded again, equalizing the game to 3-3 moments later. The Lakers took the lead into halftime, though, from Emilio Cazares's opening goal of his campaign, With Philmour Virgo setting him up for the cool finish.

Going into halftime with just a one-goal lead, The Lakers came out the second half determined to put the game to bed. Matheus Loreto scored his second from a corner kick that was flicked onto him by Keishon Clarke in the 52nd minute. Five minutes later, Emilio Cazares scored his second of the game when he was played through by Jeppe Toft-Hansen for the composed finish. Keishon Clarke then made it seven when Francis Motsi set him up for the hard strike across goal to the bottom corner.

The Lakers are now 6-1-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference play. Iowa Lakes next face Hawkeye at home on Wednesday, September 20th at 3:30pm CST. Stream live using the Iowa Lakes Athletics Webcast.
