Iowa Lakes Men's Soccer faced #2 seeded Phoenix College in the National Championship Final match on Sunday, November 19th, in Tucson, AZ. The #4 seeded Lakers became National Champions in astounding fashion, winning 5-3 in penalty kicks. The nail-biting game got on the way after a downpour that made for a slick and bobbling surface, which made it difficult for The Lakers to control the ball and play in their typical attacking fashion. They went into half-time 0-0 with 3 shots for each team.
Phoenix were able to dominate possession in the second half with their quality ball control; however, The Lakers' defense was organized and solid, creating counter-attacking opportunities that formed the best two chances of the match and gave them 4 shots to Phoenix's 3 in the second half—regulation time concluded with a tied scoreline, with neither team being able to find the back of the net.
After two golden-goal periods of ten minutes, there was still nothing to break the deadlock. It all came down to penalties. Iowa Lakes were the first to step up to the spot, and both teams converted their first shot. Iowa Lakes scored their second, but Phoenix's second taker struck the crossbar with his attempt, giving The Lakers the advantage. Iowa Lakes then converted their subsequent three attempts, with Ruadhan Feeney delivering the final blow and giving The Lakers the 5-3 shoot-out win over Phoenix to become National Champions.
The historic triumph in Tucson brought the trophy back to Spencer, IA, giving Iowa Lakes their first-ever National Title in Lakers Athletics history. The unity, grit, focus, and perseverance of this team throughout the season and tournament was truly a marvel.
Head Coach Ben MacRae had this to say about the incredible season: "Balancing a team with players from various countries and backgrounds is a formidable challenge, but this year, we found the perfect blend. It's not just about the right skill set; it's about finding individuals with the right character who can seamlessly come together as a team. This delicate balance is never easy to achieve, but this year, we did something special.
Congratulations go to our fantastic coaches, whose guidance and expertise paved the way for success. Their unwavering commitment to the vision we had for our team played a pivotal role in shaping our journey to the top. Special commendations to the players for buying into that vision and working tirelessly to turn it into reality."
