Laker Swimmers Compete at Midland

The Iowa Lakes Swimming team competed this past weekend at the Midland Invitational. They competed against 4 other teams on the women’s side and three other teams on the men’s side. The men finished with a score of 187 which was fourth overall. The women scored a total of 214 points, which was good for fourth out of five teams.

The Laker women had strong performances in several race. Julianna Villa had a strong day to continue her impressive freshman season. She contributed a 3rd place finish in the 200 free and 1st place in the 50 free and 100 free. Liz Crewe-Brown finished 2nd in both the 100 and 200 back. Mavi Valentin had a good performance as well, finishing second in the 500 back. Sophomore Gabriela Reis finished 2nd in the 200 IM.

For the men Jacob Bohnert continued his strong season with a 2nd place finish in the 500 free. Sophomore teammate Gabriel Carmona had the other highlight for the men on the day, contributing a 3rd place finish in the 100 fly.

The Lakers are still working their way back into competitive shape from the break and with the ultimate goal to be at peak performance for Nationals in March.

Head coach Todd Peters had this to say regarding the performance. “We had some athletes trying some different events and we switched up our relays a bit at the meet.  We are trying to find the best fit as we look ahead to the national meet in March.  We are also dealing with some minor injuries and illnesses so we weren’t at our best on Saturday.  The team really performed well and continues to learn how to push themselves and how to motivate their teammates.  It is really inspiring.”

The Iowa Lakes women’s swim team competes again on Saturday Jan. 19th. This meet will be against the University of Sioux Falls in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
