Team Effort Gets Lakers Two Wins

The Iowa Lakes Softball team got two wins today on a complete team effort. They took down Silver Lake College of the Holy Family 17-0 in game one. Yasmine Nix and Bibiana Rosales pitched five scoreless innings, while the offense compiled eleven hits. Nix and Julia Sullwold both threw in the 7-6 win over Cuyahoga Community College. The offense again compiled double digits in hits. The Lakers improve to 5-5 on the season with the two wins.

Game One: ILCC 17, SLCHF 0

The Lakers got things going in the second inning when Salazar and Walsh reached on two Silver Lake errors. Both players advanced on a wild pitch, before Salazar scooted across the plate on a passed ball. Kenlee Frank tripled to left center before scoring on a Gabby Heckard single. Heckard advanced to second a Montanna Popp single before scoring on a Sullwold double. Desiree Lopez followed with a ground ball to the shortstop that was misplayed, scoring two Laker runs. Leilani San Pedro then stepped up and hit an inside the park homerun to right field, scoring Lopez. Salazar was hit by the next pitch and scampered across the plate on a Kaitlin Walsh triple to put the Lakers up 9-0.

The Lakers kept things rolling in the third with a leadoff single by Heckard, followed by a Popp double. Siver Lake then committed two errors, which put the Lakers up 11-0. With runners at first and second, San Pedro singled to left field to load the bases. Salazar singled to the left side, which scored Owen. Pallisco then scored on a fielder's choice before San Pedro scored the 14th run of the game on a ground ball out by Tyana Kleis.

Iowa Lakes scored their final three runs in the bottom of the fourth with a two out homerun off the bat of Salazar.

Yasmine Nix went two innings giving up zero hits and striking out four. Bibiana Rosales pitched the remaining three innings. She gave up one hit and struck out six. Offensively, Salazar was 2-3 with four runs batted in, three runs scored, and one homerun. San Pedro, Heckard, and Popp each had two hits in the game as well.

Game Two: ILCC 7, CCC 6

Cuyahoga came out quick in the second game, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning on one hit.

The Lakers struck back, scoring two of their own in the top of the second. Salazar led off with a single before scoring on a Walsh homerun over the right field fence. Not to be outdone, Cuyahoga scored another run in the bottom of the second to put them back on top 3-2.

The score remained this way until the bottom of the fifth, when Cuyahoga scored two more runs. Cuyahoga loaded the bases with four hits and one walk before Salazar turned her second double play of the game to end the threat.

The Lakers used that momentum to score two runs in the top of the sixth. Lopez reached on an error before advancing on a line drive single off the bat of San Pedro. Walsh then drove a ball to center to load the bases and bring up Frank. Frank hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Lopez and advancing San Pedro. Laurie Custard followed with a single up the middle to score San Pedro and bring the Lakers within one, 5-4. Cuyahoga went down in order to end the sixth.

With their backs against the wall, the Lakers rallied three runs in the top of the seventh. Popp led off with a double to the right center gap, before Sullwold sacrificed her over to third. Lopez then hit a single up the middle to score Popp and tie the game. San Pedro  then drove a 2-0 count ball over the right field fence to score the final two runs of the game for the Lakers.

Cuyahoga put some pressure on the Lakers in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, they doubled to right  field, which was followed by a single to score the run. The next batter flew out to center before the next two batters singled to load the bases. Sullwold got the final batter to line out to Walsh at first base to complete the 7-6 victory for the Lakers.

Julia Sullwold (2-0) picked up the win for the Lakers. She pitched the final 3.1 innings. She allowed three earned runs on eight hits. Yasmine Nix pitched the first 3.2 innings for the Lakers, allowing three earned runs on three hits. Kaitlin Walsh led the Lakers at the plate, going 3-4 with two runs batted in, one run scored, and a homerun. Leilani San Pedro was 2-3 with two runs batted in, two runs scored, and one homerun. Laurie Custard was also 2-3.

The Lakers will play three games Tuesday, March 13th. They will take on Mott Community College at 9:00 AM EST, South Suburban College at 11:00 AM EST, and Ripon College JV at 7:00 PM EST.
