Lakers Lose Heartbreaker

Iowa Lakes softball team dropped two games against #13 Iowa Central Community College on Wednesday. The Lakers lost game one 17-4 and then dropped the second game in the bottom of the seventh 9-8.

Game One: ICCC (17)- ILCC (4)

The Lakers took their only lead of the game in the first inning. Lexus Gorospe reached first on a dropped third strike. She was brought around on a Kacie Salazar homerun.

The Tritons scored five runs in their half of the inning on three singles, three homeruns, and one walk. They scored three more runs in the bottom of the second on four hits. Iowa Central blew things open in the bottom of the fourth, when they put up nine runs on eight hits and one walk.

Iowa Lakes put up their final two runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth. Tianna Soto led off the inning with a walk. Priscilla Lozoya singled on a bunt down the first baseline, but Soto was caught trying to advance to third. Lozoya advanced to second on the throw to third. Madisyn Arechederra hit an infield single to move Lozoya to third. Gorospe followed with a single of her own to score Lozoya. Alexi Pallisco and Salazar each drew walks to score the final run of the game.

Yasmine Nix took the loss for the Lakers. She allowed seven earned runs on eight hits and one walk, while striking out one. Isabelle Karr allowed five earned runs on eight runs, while Brooklyn Mickelson allowed five runs, three earned, on three hits and two walks. Kacie Salazar led the Lakers at the plate. She was 2-2 with three runs batted in and a homerun. Lexus Gorospe, Priscilla Lozoya, and Madisyn Arechederra each had a hit for the Lakers.

Game Two: ICCC (9)- ILCC (8)

The Lakers again took the early lead in game two. Gorospe was hit by a pitch, before she stole second base. Taylor Allen singled to right to put runners on the corners. Salazar grounded out to second, which allowed Gorospe to score. Gabby Heckard grounded out to advance Allen to third, before she scored on a Triton error off the bat of Autumn Phelps.

Iowa Lakes put up three more runs in the top of the second. Laurie Custard singled, before advancing to third on a Priscilla Lozoya double. Arechederra singled to right to score Custard and both runners advanced on the throw. With runners at second and third with one out, Allen doubled to right center to put the Lakers up 5-0.

The Tritons got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third. They scored four runs on four hits, one Laker error, and a sacrifice fly.

The Lakers made quick work and put another three runs on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. Arechederra singled up the middle before Gorospe reached on a Triton error. Salazar hit her second homerun of the day to put the Lakers up 8-4.

Iowa Central put up one run in the bottom of the fourth on two hits and a sacrifice fly. They put up another run in the bottom of the fifth on three walks and a single.

Neither team threatened to score again until the seventh inning. Soto and Custard each hit two out singles, before Lozoya walked to load the bases. Iowa Central got the final out on a pop fly to left field.

The Tritons quickly got two runners on in the bottom of the seventh on a single and a walk. Isabelle Karr got the first out of the inning on a sacrifice fly to center field. With runners at second and third, Karr again got a sacrifice fly to center. The throw to third was mishandled, which allowed both runners to score and tie up the game. The Tritons final run of the game came on a walk-off homerun.

Isabelle Karr took the loss for the Lakers. She allowed three earned runs on two hits and one walk. Lexus Gorospe allowed six runs, three earned, on ten hits and four walks, while striking out four. Madisyn Arechederra was 3-4 with two runs scored in game two. Laurie Custard and Taylor Allen each were 2-4 with one run scored, while Kacie Salazar drove in four of the Lakers eight runs.

The Lakers will be at home Thursday, April 24th, to take on Des Moines Area Community College. The game times are set for 3:00 and 5:00 PM.
