Where Are They Now?- Ashley Schmid (Heiberger)

Our next softball player to catch up with is Ashley Schmid (Heiberger). Ashley is originally from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where she graduated from Lincoln High School with around 300 students. She was not sure where she wanted to go after graduating high school but knew she did not want to commit to a four-year school initially. After she visited with Mike Bosch, Ashley knew she wanted to attend a smaller school. She loved the idea that the class sizes were smaller, which meant she had more student/teacher interaction.  Ultimately, the success of the program and facilities at Iowa Lakes is what sold her on the school.

Ashley attended Iowa Lakes from 2008-2010, where she caught for the Lakers. During her time at Iowa Lakes, Ashley helped the 2010 team to a 3rd place finish at the National Tournament, the highest finish in Iowa Lakes history. She also helped the team break the following single-season records: games (72), wins (61), hits (802), runs (582), RBI's (512), doubles (181), stolen bases (228), and batting average (.400). Ashley currently ranks in eight of the top ten records for the Iowa Lakes Softball Program. She is 1st all-time in hit by pitches (22) and triples (13), 2nd in runs scored (137) and stolen bases (77), 3rd in runs batted in (136), 6th in career at-bats (324) and hits (154), and 7th in homeruns (16). Additionally, Ashley holds two single-season records; runs batted in (101 in the 2010 season) and triples (8 in the 2010 season). She was awarded 1st Team All-Region during the 2009 and 2010 seasons, 1st Team NFCA All-American during the 2010 season, and Defensive Player of the Year in Region XI during the 2010 season. Ashley and her 2010 team were inducted into the Iowa Lakes Athletics Hall of Fame in 2017 and she was personally inducted in 2018.

One of Ashley's favorite things about Iowa Lakes were the people, staff, and softball program. She loved riding the bus to games and hanging out with friends and teammates.

After graduating from Iowa Lakes, Ashley attended Quinnipiac University (Division I) to continue her athletic and academic careers. She completed her Communications Degree from Quinnipiac.

Ashley currently lives in Garretson, South Dakota, with her husband Levi Schmid. They have two daughters together, Allison who is three years old and Josephine who is a year old. Ashley is a Paralegal in downtown Sioux Falls and is a photography enthusiast!

Ashley had this to say about her time at Iowa Lakes, "I met my best friend on my first day of moving into my room at Iowa Lakes and we live only blocks from each other now. I stay in touch with my coach and some past teammates. Going to a community college was one of the best decisions I have ever made!"
