Laker Softball Suffers Two Losses to NIACC

The Iowa Lakes Community College Softball team dropped two games to #17 North Iowa Area Community College. The Trojans took game one 9-7 in eight innings and then game two 14-5. The Lakers are now 27-15 overall and 10-12 in conference.

GAME 1: 9 (NIACC), 7 (ILCC) 8 innings

The Lakers jumped out to the early lead in the game. Alyssa Thorson singled to center and then quickly scored on a Bryn Bohmann homerun. MacKenna Jones and Karisa Hernandez both walked and advanced on Olivia Funk's single up the middle Jones then sped home on a passed ball to give the Lakers a 3-0 lead.

Iowa Lakes was able to tack on a run in the second when Thorson again led off with a single. She then stole second and scored on a Bohmann single and Trojan error.

NIACC was able to make it a one run ballgame in when they scored three in the third. With two outs, the Trojans were able to get a single and walk that was followed by a homerun. Baylee O'Donnell drew a one out walk and then advanced to second on Funk's single. Back to back walks to Kiaya Dunbar and Thorson scored O'Donnell and made the score 5-3 in favor of the Lakers.

A leadoff double for the Trojans that was followed by a two out double brought the score to within one again.

The score remained 5-4 until the Lakers put up two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Dunbar drew a four pitch walk and then Thorson homered to give the Lakers a three run lead going into the seventh.

The top of the seventh saw the Trojans tie the game up at seven. A leadoff single was followed by two quick fly outs. NIACC was able to then double and homer to tie the game back up. NIACC scored another two runs in the eighth on a homerun, walk, and two singles.

Alyssa Thorson was 3-4 with three runs scored and three runs batted in. Bryn Bohmann was 3-4 with two runs batted in and Olivia Funk was also 3-4 in the game. MacKenna Jones suffered the loss for the Lakers. She pitched all eight innings, allowing nine earned runs on eleven hits, three walks, and one hit by pitch. She struck out eight batters in the game.

GAME 2: 14 (NIACC), 5 (ILCC) 5 innings

The Trojans led off the game with a triple to right field. That run came around to score on a groundout to Bartelt. NIACC added two runs in the second on a single and homerun. The third inning saw the Lakers give up five runs on two hits, four walks, and one error. NIACC scored their final six runs in the top of the fourth. This was on five hits and two walks.

Iowa Lakes was able to get some offense going when Bohmann hit a solo homerun in the fourth. Jones followed with a walk and then scored on a Grafton homerun to center. Karisa Hernandez then laid down a bunt single and advanced to second on Macy Alderson's walk. Abby Zahn entered the game and quickly singled to right to score.

Paige Grafton was 2-3 with three runs batted in and a homerun. Baylee O'Donnell took the loss for the Lakers in the circle. She pitched four innings, allowing seven earned runs, on nine hits and two walks. She struck out one batter on the day. Jayda Staige pitched one inning, allowing seven runs, five earned. She did this on four hits and four walks, while striking out two.

The Lakers will look to finish out their conference play with two more games against North Iowa Area Community College tomorrow, April 24th. Games will be played at Iowa Lakes at 3:00 and 5:00 PM.
