Iowa Lakes Softball Sweeps Southeast

The Iowa Lakes Community College Softball team earned two wins today over Southeast Community College. The Lakers took game one 15-12 and game two 6-4. The Lakers improve to 4-0 on the season.

GAME 1: 15 (ILCC), 12 (SCC)  

Southeast got on the board first, scoring one run on two hits in the bottom of the first inning.

The Lakers quickly countered with two runs of their own in the top of the second. Taylor Larson hit a leadoff solo homerun. With two outs, Brooklyn Bode singled and then stole second. She came around to score on a single off the bat of Abby Burgess.

The third inning saw seven Lakers cross the plate. Katelyn Hamm started the inning with a single but was forced out on a fielder's choice from Ally Davis. Davis then stole second and advanced to third on Macy Alderson's single. Larson then blasted a double off the fence to score Davis and advance Alderson to second. Both runners scampered home off a single from Alexis Cullinane. Alyvia Jensen then drew a walk and Bode singled to load the bases. Cullinane and Jensen used some crafty baserunning to both score on a wild pitch. With the Lakers now up 7-1 Bode on third, Burgess walked before Bode scored on a missed pickoff attempt at third. Murphy singled to push across the final run of the inning. Southeast was able to get three runs back in the bottom half of the inning on a single, walk, and homerun.

With two quick outs, Cullinane kept the fourth inning alive with a single. Jensen followed with a single of her own and Bode doubled to score Cullinane and advance Jensen to third. The Bobcats were able to put up five runs in their half of the inning on three hits, one walk, and one Laker error.

Southeast took the lead in the bottom of the fifth on three walks, two hits, and one sacrifice fly.

With their backs against the wall, Larson led off the inning with a single to left. Cullinane then drove the first ball she saw over the center field fence to give the Lakers the lead once again. Bode hit a solo homerun and Hamm hit a two-run homerun in the inning as well to give the Lakers a 15-11 lead going into the bottom half of the sixth.

Southeast was able to muster one run in the seventh on two doubles. Larson and the defense were able to stop the run at that, getting a fly out to Bode and a strikeout to end the game.

Brooklyn Bode was 4-4 with one double, one homerun, three runs scored, two runs batted in, one walk, and two stolen bases. Alexis Cullinane also had four hits in the game, including a homerun. She also scored three times, scored three of her teammates, and stole a base. The Lakers combined for twenty hits in the game, including every person in the lineup contributing at least one hit. Taylor Larson picked up the win. She threw 2.1 innings, allowing one earned run on four hits, one walk, and five strikeouts. Jolene Jordahl started the game, going 3.1 innings. She allowed ten hits, eight runs, six earned runs, two walks, and two strikeouts. Tatiyana Schack also pitched in relief, allowing three earned runs on one hit and three walks.

GAME 2: 6 (ILCC), 4 (SCC)

The Lakers were first to get on the scoreboard in the third inning. Bode led off with a triple down the left field line and then scored on Burgess' single to right. Burgess then stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. She came around to score on a Bobcats error.

Southeast tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth with a one out solo homerun. With two outs back-to-back-to-back singles allowed another run to come across and tie up the ballgame.

Iowa Lakes quickly regained the lead when Hamm led off the fifth with a walk. Two groundouts advanced Hamm to third. With Jensen entering the game and two outs, she put a hard ground ball into play that was mishandled by Southeast, allowing Hamm to score. Madison Goosman then blasted a single over the right fielder's head to score Jensen from first and give the Lakers a 4-2 lead. Southeast tied the game back up in their half of the inning on three hits.

Burgess put the Lakers back on top in the sixth with a solo homerun. With Jordahl now on the mound, the Bobcats sent four batters to the plate. This resulted in a groundout, walk, and two fly outs.

The Lakers got their final run of the game in the top of the seventh. Larson walked and then put herself in scoring position with a stolen base. Jense came up big for the Lakers again, singling and scoring Larson.

Abby Burgess was 2-3 with two runs scored, two runs batted in, two stolen bases, and a walk. Brooklyn Bode, Madison Goosman, and Alyvia Jensen each added a hit for the Lakers. Jolene Jordahl got the win in the circle, pitching 2.1 innings. She allowed no runs on two hits, one walk, and two strikeouts. Taylor Larson started the game, going 4.2 innings. She allowed four earned runs on seven hits, one walk, and six strikeouts.

The Lakers will have another double header against Southeast Community College tomorrow, March 2nd. Game times are 12:00 and 2:00 PM.
