Iowa Lakes Softball Takes One from Triton College

The Iowa Lakes Community College Softball team continued with their tough schedule in Florida today, winning one and losing one. They started the day losing 4-3 to Spoon River College, before beating Triton College 6-5. The Lakers are now 8-8 on the season.

GAME 1: 4 (SRC), 3 (ILCC)

Spoon River began the game by scoring two runs in the first. They did this on two walks and a single.

The Lakers were able to tie things up in the second when Madison Goosmann led off the inning with a single. She was then forced out on a groundout from Alyvia Jensen. With Jensen on first, Macy Alderson doubled to center to put two runners in scoring position. Alayna Leighton followed with a single, scoring both Jensen and Alderson and tying the game 2-2.

The Snappers quickly responded, putting up one run on a walk, a stolen base, and double in the third.

The score remained 3-2 in favor of Spoon River, until Myle Murphy got things started in the fifth. Murphy singled and then stole second, before scampering home on a Katelyn Hamm single. The Lakers were able to get Hamm into scoring position with one out but were unable get the run across.

Spoon River led off the top of the seventh with a single. She then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on a wild pitch. The Lakers were able to get the second out of the inning to pop out to Hamm at short, but unfortunately the winning run came across the plate on the second wild pitch of the inning.

Alayna Leighton was 2-3 at the plate with two runs batted in and a stolen base. Madison Goosmann was also 2-3 with a walk. Jolene Jordahl suffered the loss allowing four earned runs on five hits and four walks, while striking out one.

GAME 2: 6 (ILCC), 5 (TC)

Game two started very similar to game one as Triton put up two runs on three hits and a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Triton continued to grow their lead by adding one run on a walk and two hits in the second. The Trojans scored one more run in the fourth on a hit by pitch, walk, stolen base, and sacrifice fly. Their final run of the game came in the fifth on two hits.

With the Lakers down 5-0 in the sixth, they could quickly see the game slipping away from them. With one out, Goosmann walked and then advanced to second on a single from Alexis Cullinane. With Goosmann in scoring position, Alderson singled to score her. Both Cullinane and Alderson advanced one base on the throw to home. Leighton quickly followed with a single to score Cullinane and advance Alderson to second. With the score now 5-3, Bode stepped in and hit an RBI groundout to the shortstop, scoring Alderson. Now with two outs and Leighton still at second, Abby Burgess stepped into the box. She took the first pitch that she saw over the left field fence to tie up the game. Murphy did not want the rally to end there, as she singled and then stole second to put herself into scoring position. Hamm then came up clutch with a single down the left field line to score Murphy and put the Lakers ahead.

In the final two innings, Taylor Larson and the Lakers allowed one baserunner on one walk. They were able to put the Trojans down in order in the seventh inning on a strikeout, groundout to Leighton, and lineout to Leighton.

Myla Murphy was the leader at the plate for the Lakers in game two. She was 3-4 with one run scored and one stolen base. Abby Burgess was 2-4 with two runs batted in, one run scored, and one stolen base. Taylor Larson picked up the win, allowing five earned runs on seven hits and three walks, while striking out three.

The Lakers will return to play on Wednesday, March 13th, to take on Spoon River College and Cuyahoga College. Games times are set for 2:45 PM and 5:00 PM est.
