Lakers Drop Two to Mustangs

The Iowa Lakes Community College Softball team dropped two games against Morningside University. They lost game one in the bottom of the seventh 9-8 and then lost game two 12-3. The Lakers are now 9-11 on the season.

GAME 1: 9 (MU), 8 (ILCC)

With one out, Myla Murphy singled and then stole second. She advanced to third on a Katelyn Hamm single before Taylor Larson drew a walk to load the bases. Madison Goosmann also walked, scoring the first run of the game. With the bases still loaded, Alyvia Jensen grounded out to the shortstop, scoring Hamm and putting the Lakers up 2-0. The Mustangs were able to score four runs in their half of the inning on three hits, two Laker errors, and a walk.

Morningside was able to score another run in the third on a double, fly out, and a sacrifice fly.

Macy Alderson started the Lakers comeback in the fourth when she led off the inning with a single to left. She then stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Alayna Leighton then stepped up and single up the middle to make the score 5-3 in favor of the Mustangs. Brooklyn Bode followed with a walk and then both runners scored on a triple off the bat of Abby Burgess.

The game would remain tied until Morningside scored two on a hit by pitch and homerun in the fifth.

The sixth saw the Lakers load the bases with on three walks in a row. Jensen drew the fourth walk of the inning, scoring Hamm. Leighton again came up big for the Lakers, this time on two outs, with a single to the shortstop to score Larson and tie the game at seven a piece.

Burgess led the seventh off with a hit by pitch. She then stole second and advanced to third on a single from Murphy. Larson then perfectly executed a squeeze to give the Lakers the 8-7 lead. The Mustangs led off their half of the inning with a single. Larson then got the first out of the inning on a strikeout, before the Mustangs blasted a ball over the left field fence for the walk off win.

The Lakers were led at the plate by Alayna Leighton. She was a perfect 4-4 with one run scored, two runs batted in, and a stolen base. Myla Murphy added two hits of her own with two stolen bases. Taylor Larson suffered the loss, only pitching .1 innings and allowing two earned runs on two hits. Jolene Jordahl pitched 6 innings, allowing seven earned runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out seven.

GAME 2: 12 (MU), 3 (ILCC)

Iowa Lakes again took the early lead in game two, scoring two runs in the second inning. Ally Davis led off with a single and advanced to second on a single from Leighton. Both runners advanced sixty feet on a groundout by Bode, before both runners scored on an Abby Burgess single and Mustang error. They were able to extend their lead in the third with a leadoff single from Larson and double to left from Alderson.

Morningside would then take over the offense, scoring two in the third on three hits, two in the fourth on four hits, and eight in the fifth on five hits, one walk, one hit by pitch, and one Laker error.

Myla Murphy was 2-2 in the ballgame with a walk and stolen base. Taylor Larson was 2-3 with a run scored. Larson also took the loss in game two, pitching 4.1 innings and allowing nine runs, six earned. She did this on twelve hits, one walk, and four strikeouts. Jolene Jordahl pitched .1 innings, allowing three earned runs on two hits, one hit by pitch, and one strikeout.

The Lakers are scheduled to take on Division I Marshalltown Community College on Sunday, March 24th, at 2:00 and 4:00 PM.
