Lakers get Overtime Win Over Mount Marty JV

The Lakers win their second game of the season in a thrilling overtime contest over Mount Marty JV 83-80.  With the victory Iowa Lakes moves to 2-1 on the season.

It was a slow start for the Lakers, trailed at the end of the first quarter 10-21. They outscored mount Marty JV 21-15 in the second quarter to close the gap to five entering halftime. The third quarter was fairly evenly matched and Mount Marty was able to retain a seven point lead, 52-45, going into the fourth quarter. During the fourth quarter, however, the Lakers were finally able to pull ahead. 

With 1:27 to go in the 4th quarter the Lakers were up 5. Mount Marty nailed a 3 to cut the Laker lead to 2. Beth Rehse grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled but earned a trip to the free throw line, where she made 1 of 2, to bring the lead back to 3. Mount Marty  made a lay-up to cut the Laker lead to 1. Breanna Wendland got fouled with 21.9 seconds left and made 1 of 2 from the line to put the Lakers up 71-69. With 4 seconds left Mount Marty ran a side line out of bounds play and were fouled in the act of shooting.  Both free throws were successful to take the game into overtime at 71-71.

Mount Marty scored first in overtime nailing a 3 to go up 74-71. With 3 minutes to go in overtime Mount Marty made a lay-up to go up 5. Wendland found Hagedorn who connected on a 3 to cut the lead to 74-76. Mount Marty came back down and countered with a 3 of their own to bring the lead back to 5, at 79-74. Hagedorn was fouled going in for a lay-up and went 1-2 from the line to bring the score to 75-79. Following a defensive stop, Rehse found Wendland for a lay-up in transition to cut it to 77-79. Iowa Lakes then forced a turnover and Wendland got fouled attacking the basket and hits 1-2 from the free throw line to bring the Lakers to within 1, 78-79. Hayden came up with a steal and pitched the ball ahead to Shanice Vaughn who earned the assist for the Hagedorn layup to give the Lakers a 1 point lead, 80-79. Mount Marty was then fouled with 20 seconds to go and made 1-2 at the line to tie the game at 80.  With twenty seconds left in the game, the Lakers came down, Wendland attacked the rim and kicked to Vaughn to knock down the 3 to put the Lakers up 83-80. Mount Marty pitched it ahead but stepped out of bounds and turned it over to end the game. 

Freshman Breanna Wendland of Minneapolis, MN led Iowa Lakes with 31 points and freshman Samantha Hagedorn of Bancroft, IA finished with 18 points shooting 4-6 beyond the arc. The Lakers shot 41.8% from the field, hitting 28-67 field goal attempts. They were 6-16 from three point range and 21-34 from the free throw line.

Beth Rehse pulled down 11 rebounds with Shanice Vaughn grabbed 8 boards. The Lakers outrebounded Mount Marty 46-36.

 "Great effort by the team today. It was really good to see us show some fight and compete. We got down by five in overtime and we didn't give up; we kept fighting and working. We can continue to build on this. We are continuing to improve everyday. It will be a quick turnaround for us tomorrow as we take on Northeast. This will be a good challenge for us," commented Head Coach Ashley Martin.

The Lakers are 2-1 on the season and 0-0 in conference play. The Lakers return to action tomorrow as they take on Northeast CC in Norfolk, NE at 4pm. The Lakers return home on Wednesday, November 14th when they host Minnesota West at 5:30pm.
