Lakers Finish 6th at Frommelt Classic
Coming off of their recent win, the Iowa Lakes women's golf team traveled to Sioux City, Iowa to compete in the Lila Frommelt Fall Classic hosted by Briar Cliff University at Two Rivers Golf Club. The two day tournament took place on Friday the 14th and Saturday the 15th and had 14 teams as well as 80 golfers. The Lakers were in a tie for 8th place after day one posting a team score of 350, led by freshman Abby Stender and Alexia Kemper both posting an 83 on the day.
"We got off to a bit of a rocky start and the girls didn't exactly post what they were hoping." said Coach Weber after the first round. "Our first few holes for everybody were not exactly ideal, but after a little while they began to settle in. I was very proud of the way that they held their composure and found a way to post a respectable score on a course they had never seen before."
Day two was met with open skies and a mini heat wave and was a very taxing round for everyone involved. The Lakers were able to cut 15 shots as a team and post a 335, which moved them ahead of the College of St. Mary - Nebraska and Concordia University - Nebraska by one and two shots, respectively. The Lakers were again led by Abby Stender with an 81 and Alexia Kemper with another 83. Annika DuMoulin shaved five shots to post a second day 86, while Molly Diekmann cut an incredible 23 shots from her first round score of 108 to post an 85. Erin Baum played consistent golf, posting a 93 and a 96 for rounds one and two.
"We had a great conversation after round one and the girls admitted that they were not quite mentally prepared for the beginning of round one and promised they would be more focused for round two. And they definitely were." Coach Weber had to add about day two. "They came out focused and ready to compete. I think they may have fizzled a little bit down the end, partially due to the heat, otherwise they could have posted some really good scores, but a 335 was great to see and was a very good score to post along with some very talented young women at these four-year universities. We held our own, but we still have work to do to get to where we want to be and will need to find a few strokes to shave as a team for our Regional Tournament, but I think this group is going to be more than ready come April."
The Lakers will hit the links this Thursday, September 20th, at Landsmeer Golf Club in Orange City, Iowa at the Northwestern Fall Invite.
