Laker Women Qualify for Naitonals
The Iowa Lakes women's golf program will be sending five individuals to the NJCAA National Championship at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Florida after the Region XI tournament came to a close this Saturday (April 27th). Sophomores Annika DuMoulin and Molly Diekmann as well as freshmen Abby Stender, Alexia Kemper, and Erin Baum have all earned an individual bid after the team earned a runner-up finish at Otter Creek Golf Club in Ankeny, Iowa.
"I could not be any more proud of these girls", said Coach Weber when asked about his team at the regional tournament. "They had all set lofty goals at the beginning of the season to make it to nationals, and with hard work and determination, they achieved those goals today and I could not be happier for all of them."
The Lakers would post a round three team total of 354 and a shortened round four total of 187. Leading the way for the Lakers was Abby Stender who carded rounds of 83 and 46. Alexia Kemper would tally 89 and 47, Molly Diekmann 89 and 48, Annika DuMoulin 93 and 47, and Erin Baum 95 and 47. After round three, the team was in second place behind eventual team champion Iowa Western, and only Erin Baum was outside the cutline. She was sitting one shot behind the final spot. With cold, windy, and rainy conditions forecasted, round four would eventually be shortened to only nine holes. Nine holes was all the time needed for Erin Baum to move up two shots and secure her individual bid.
"The girls showed a lot of heart and grit this weekend. They didn't have there best game, but they grinded it out and did just enough to secure their spots. I was very proud of the way they regained their focus and fought for ever stroke, and it ended up being the difference in the end. I have truly enjoyed coaching this team this season, and capping it all off with everybody going down to nationals is a very fitting way to end what has been a fantastic season."
The Iowa Lakes women's golf team will travel down to Daytona Beach, Florida on May 12th to participate in the NJCAA National Championship at LPGA International. The tournament consists of four rounds that will take place from the 13th-16th.
