Lakers in 10th after Round 1 of National Tournament

The Iowa Lakes women's golf team is currently in 10th place after the first completed round at the 2019 NJCAA National Championship at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Florida, posting a team score of 369. The first day of the tournament was cancelled after a severe thunderstorm came through and prevented the playing field from completing their first round, thus shortening the tournament to a 54 hole event, rather than the original 72 holes.

Leading the way for the Lakers were freshman Alexia Kemper and Abby Stender who posted scores of 86 and 87 and are currently in a T-37th and T-43rd, respectively, in a field of 127 players.

"The girls did not post a team score that they were initially very proud of, however this is the National Championship and we are playing a very tough, long golf course. You add in some wet playing conditions and you make this course even longer and you make it even tougher. The girls fought very well and kept good attitudes and that is really all we can hope for right now at this course and in this field. We came in hoping to crack the top ten and we are right there, so day one was overall a good day," said Iowa Lakes head golf coach Jarvis Weber.

Rounding out the other scores for Iowa Lakes was Erin Baum with a 97, Annika DuMoulin with a 99, and Molly Diekmann with a 102.

"Alexia and Abby did a great job keeping up just enough momentum to find a solid score. Nothing great, but respectable. Erin, Annika, and Molly all have a lot more in them and learned quite a bit from today. I think that they have good attitudes going into tomorrow so we have a great chance to make a move up the leaderboard. Eighth place is only ten shots away and ninth place is only seven, so we are in a great position."

The Lakers will be teeing off tomorrow starting at 12:10pm ET to start their second round of three at LPGA International in Daytona Beach.
