Preston and Stender Lead Lakers at NIACC
The Iowa Lakes men's and women's golf teams both came up a little short at the North Iowa Area Community College Fall Invitational at the Mason City Country Club in Mason City, Iowa on Thursday. The Laker men posted a team score of 296, three shots behind Des Moines Area Community College, and the women posted 348 which was seven shots behind the DMACC women.
Although the teams were unable to come home with a win, Iowa Lakes was able to take home both medalists positions as James Preston and Abby Stender found their way to the top of the leaderboard after posting rounds of two under 70 and seven over par 79, respectively.
"At the beginning of the day we really did not think we were even going to get this round in, so we were very lucky that mother nature gave us just enough time to finish. James and Abby both went about their rounds and took care of business to lead their teams, however it just wasn't quite enough as we fell behind two very talented DMACC teams." said Iowa Lakes golf coach Jarvis Weber. "From the top of the rosters and down to the bottom, we had a lot of good things happen, but we have a lot of things that we need to address and tighten up as the season goes on. We will continue to work and improve every single day. Yet again, Region XI is going to be a very entertaining conference, so this season should be a lot of fun."
Other notable scores for the Lakers were Joey Murphy with a 72, Conal Downing and Trace Jacobson with 75's, Dawson Weber with a 76, and Alexia Kemper placing fifth overall for the ladies with an 86.
The Lakers will get some time to rest and prepare as the next tournament for both the men and the women is at the RedTail Shootout hosted by Hawkeye Community College on September 26th at the South Hills Golf Course in Waterloo, Iowa.
