Stender Leads Lakers to Second in Waterloo

Men Win, Ladies Finish Second in Waterloo

After coming up a stroke short on Wednesday at the Storm Invite, the Laker men were able to come out a shot ahead Thursday at the Red Tail Shootout in Waterloo, Iowa hosted by Hawkeye Community College at South Hills Golf Course. Leading the charge for the Lakers were freshmen Conal Downing and James Preston who finished first and second place overall individually with rounds of two under 70 and one under 71, respectively.

"Conal and James have both been playing very well this fall season and it was great to see their hard work and leadership lead to a team win today, especially after falling a stroke short the day before in Indianola," said Iowa Lakes golf coach Jarvis Weber when asked about his top two players' performances. "Conal and James are two very talented players who are also great leaders, and that has had a huge impact on our teams success. I know the other players feed off of their confidence and swagger, so I am very excited to see where this team goes."

The Lakers were able to post a score of 296, one shot ahead of North Iowa Area Community College who posted 297. Other scores for Iowa Lakes were Trace Jacobson with a 76, Dawson Weber with a 79, Joey Murphy with an 81, and Luke Sladek with an 81 playing as an individual.

The Iowa Lakes women's golf team was able to show some improvement from Wednesday to Thursday, posted a team score of 359, six shots behind team champion Des Moines Area Community College, which was good enough for a second place finish. Leading the way for the Lakers was sophomore Abby Stender with a tie-second finish of 85.

"This is a very talented team that is simply in a bit of a funk right now and has not played anywhere near our true potential; yet. We are out grinding and fighting every single day, and I could not be prouder of the way they are continuing to scratch and claw through this rough patch and continuing to get better," said Coach Weber. "Our sophomores are doing a great job leading and our freshmen our doing an incredible job of keeping our team's energy high and moral up. We have a great team culture here, so it is simply a matter of time until this team plays to the level that they are more than capable of as long as we stay patient and keep working."

Rounding out the team scores were Alexia Kemper and Tiger Tsosie with 91's, Erin Baum with a 92, Madilyn Shandorf with a 94 as an individual, and Kelly Winter with a 95.

The Laker men will have one day to regroup and prepare for the 3rd Annual Quad Cup which will be played on Saturday, September 28th at Honey Creek Golf Course in Boone, Iowa. The ladies will be heading to the Bent Tree Intercollegiate at Bent Tree Golf Course in Council Bluffs, Iowa on Monday, September 30th and Tuesday, October 1st.
