Lakers Face Tough Conditions at Bent Tree

The Iowa Lakes women's golfers were met with less than ideal conditions at the Bent Tree Intercollegiate in Council Bluffs, IA this weekend. The Lakers would end up finishing in fifth place out of six teams with scores of 370 and 356. Leading the way for the Lakers was sophomore Erin Baum with a splits of 90-86, finishing in fourteenth place.

"The first round was not easy for anybody today. The wind was blowing around 30mph and the greens were hard and slick, and the scores showed." said Iowa Lakes golf coach Jarvis Weber. "The girls did a lot of good things, but unfortunately we didn't do enough good things to bring in a lower score. They did all they could given the situation and that is all you can ask."

With the forecast of heavy rains and thunderstorms coming in for round two, the second day round was converted into two separate nine hole rounds with hopes of getting at least nine holes in. With some blind luck, the rains stayed away and round two was able to be played in its entirety.

"The course was wet from overnight rains, the greens were slowed down a bit and the wind was non-existent, so I knew the girls would score a little better today. Erin, Kelly, and Alexia did a great job leading us today with rounds in the 80's, unfortunately the course conditions were easier for everybody and we didn't do quite enough to move up the leaderboard."

Entering round two, the Lakers were tied with Des Moines Area Community College and in a tie for fourth. After round two, they trailed DMACC by six shots and fell to fifth.

"We are doing a lot of good things and I can see the improvement here and there, we just have not been able to put it all together yet, but I know we will. We have a lot of hard working, talented players on this team who are not satisfied with where they are right now and it will keep pushing them in the right direction." added Coach Weber. "I was really happy to see Erin and Kelly hit the ball really well over the two days, and the rest of the girls are showing a lot of fight right now. They might not know it yet, but these types of rounds are going to help them tremendously in the future."

The Iowa Lakes women will look to wrap up their season at the TPC Deere Run Invitational hosted by William Penn University on October 12th and 13th in Silvis, Illinois.
