7 Laker Wrestler Place at Auggie Open

The Laker wrestlers traveled north to compete at the Auggie Open hosted by Augsburg College in Minneapolis. In a tournament filled with NJCAA, NAIA, NCAA Division II & III competition the Lakers had seven wrestlers place in their respective weight classes. Head coach Cody Alesch is encouraged by the improvements his team has made thus far. He had this to say about his team's performance "collectively as a group this is the best I've seen us compete. I'm proud of how many guys wrestled at a high pace, were aggressive and dictate the action on the mat. When you're doing those things the scoreboard will take care of itself."

Mitchell Williamson took 1st at 285 lbs going 4-0. This was the freshman's first time medaling at a college tournament and he did so in dramatic fashion. In the final match of the tournament, Mitchell found himself a formidable opponent from Central College, however in the third overtime Mithcell was able to capitalize on the overzealous nature of his opponent and take down as the clock was winding down to wind the match.

Bunmi Smith was the champion at 174 lbs. In route to the finals, Bunmi recorded three pins. In the finals he found himself in a barn burner with an experienced wrestler from Upper Iowa, both wrestlers were extremely aggressive looking to score points. Bunmi was able to prevail with a 10-7 decision, finishing the day 4-0.

At 125 lbs Kevin Saravia took 2nd pace, going 3-0 before withdrawing due to an injury. In route to the finals, Kevin avenged his only loss on the year in the quarterfinals beating Eron Haynes from Nebraska Wesleyan 12-8.
