Laker Wrestling has strong day at Dave Edmunds Open 2-7-21

Laker Wrestling has strong day at Dave Edmunds Open 2-7-21

Iowa Lakes wrestling team had a strong showing today at the Dave Edmunds Open hosted by Morningside College.  The Lakers placed eight in the top 4 of their respective weight classes while sending 6 into the finals.  Three of those 6 claimed titles on the day.  Massoma Endene a freshman from Arlington, TX dominated the 174 lb weight class with 3 falls and a 18-3 technical-fall win in the finals over Tim Huber of Concordia, NE.

"Massoma really stepped up today after dropping his dual match Thursday.  To see him respond like he did today impressed me and really showed me something.  I know what his wrestling ability is but we learned a lot about Massoma as a competitor today," commented Coach Alesch.

Logan Koedam also controlled the 184 lb weight class pinning his way through the tournament and doing so in just 32 seconds in the finals over Elijah Ramos of Jamestown University.

"Same with Logan, as he too suffered a loss Thursday that stung and for him to respond with a dominate performance today was fun to watch.  Logan wrestled tough all day and was really focused in, "stated Coach Alesch.

The other Champ was Mitchell Williamson at 285 lbs who collected a medical forfeit in the finals.  Mitchell gave up 1 point today in his 3 contested matches and really controlled his opponents all day.

"Was great seeing Mitchell get to his offense today and the production was much better because of it.  No one really was close to Mitchell all day," said Coach Alesch.

Karsten Johnson at 125 lbs., Jeremiah Boykins at 133 lbs. and Dimitri Alicea at 157 lbs all took 2nd having good days.  Dimitri suffered an injury with 30 seconds left in the match while leading.

"These three guys that took 2nd really did have good days and we were capable of winning all 3 of those matches.  Karsten battled right to the last second and was so close to winning that match, really proud of Johnson for battling like he did.  Boykins has really been coming along and getting better every week.  He looked good all day, got a little out of sync in the finals match but he will take a lot  away from today.  Dimitri's end to the day was just tough for every Laker wrestler.  Dimitri is such a great leader and really has been someone we as a coaching staff look to lead this team.  He was beating people up all day, wrestling with such intensity and really brining life to our guys through his wrestling. To see him go down in as much pain as he was in really shocked everyone.  We are all concerned for Dimitri and hoping we get better news once we get him back to Iowa Lakes and evaluated further.  We left a few matches out there today, however, it was a big step in the right direction for this team.  We were the most physical team at the tourney today and that was not the case in our dual this past Thursday.  Seeing the guys come out and respond tough all day was fun to watch," said Coach Alesch.

Dontario Norwood took 3rd place at 141 lbs. and Grayson Fries took 4th at 133 lbs. to round out the Lakers good day on the mat.
