Five Iowa Lakes Women’s Soccer Players Earn All-Region Honors

(SPENCER, IOWA) Five Iowa Lakes Community College women's soccer athletes were named to the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Division I Women's Soccer All-Region teams. The Iowa Lakes Lakers ended on a winning season with a 8-5-1, their first winning season in 7 years. On top of the season's success, the Lakers earned several individual accolades.

 

Paola Then and Alexis Vasquez were named to the ICCAC All-Region 1st team, and Maria Vilhena, Alicia Cortez, and Niamh Kerrigan were named to the ICCAC All-Region Honorable Mention team.

 

Paola Then, a freshmen defender from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic played in 13 games, scored 2 goals and had 1 assist on the season.  "Paola was the definition of a true warrior, she never gave up and always gave 110% for the school and her teammates, her overall improvement from week one was great to see and I couldn't be more happy for her," commented Coach Cain.

 

Alexis Vasquez, a sophomore midfield/forward from Madera, CA played in 13 games, scored 17 goals, and had 13 assists on the season. "Alexis- "Chiquita" was sensational for the team this year. To go from scoring two goals last season to 17 goals this season is a credit to her coachability, dedication and natural talent. Alexis will be a player fans will want to watch in the future," commented Coach Cain.

 

Maria Vilhena, a freshmen forward from Sao Bras De Alportel, Faro, Portugal played in 12 games , scored 15 goals, and had 7 assists on the season. "Maria had a meaningful role in our success this season, as her creativity and ability to find the net led to some great results,"  commented Coach Cain.

 

Alicia Cortez, a freshmen forward from Sioux City, IA played in 14 games, scored 10 goals, and had 4 assists on the season. "Alicia worked tirelessly to create goal scoring chances for herself and teammates and deserves to be honored for the results she produced," commented Coach Cain.

 

Niamh Kerrigan, a freshmen defender from Sheffield, England played in 14 games and was a leader on the defensive end for the Lakers. "Niamh was the driving force behind our defensive success this year, and we could always count on her,"  commented Coach Cain.

 

The Lakers ended their season with an overall record of 8-5-1 and finished second in the conference.
