Lakers Wrap Up Strong National Championship Performances

The Laker Men's and Women's Swimming Team wrapped a highly successful season with a sixth place finish for the women and an eighth place for the men.  The women held their team placing from a year ago and the men moved up one spot.

The women were led by Juliana Villa Rodriguez who had four top eight finishes in the 50 (5th), 100 (4th), and 200 back (3rd) and the 200 freestyle (6th).  Gabriela Reis finished top 10 in her four events; 200 IM (10th), 400 IM (6th), 100 Breaststroke (10th), and 200 Breaststroke (8th). Liz Crewe-Brown was top 12 in her four events; 200 IM (11th), 400 IM (8th), 100 Backstroke (8th), and 200 backstroke (9th). Mavi Valentin finished top 16 in her three events; 1000 Free (12th), 500 free (14th), and 1650 free (10th). Ashley Commens finished top 16 in three of her four events; 50 Breaststroke (13th), 100 IM (15th), and 50 Fly (15th).

The men were led by Jacob Bohnert who finished top nine in his four events; 50 Back (7th), 200 Free (6th), 100 Free (9th), and 500 Free (9th).  Gabriel improved from his performances a year ago placing in the 200 IM (9th), 100 Breaststroke (15th), and 200 Breaststroke (12th).

"We knew we would encounter challenges since we had a smaller team than most attending the national meet.  Our women were very strong, scoring in 18 of the 19 individual events they participated in and four of the relays.  All the swimmers except one had lifetime best performances in all their events.  The only person who didn't have her best meet was Mavi Valentin, but she was pushing through an injury and she still placed in all three of her events.  We are very happy with our overall performance and we look forward to making improvements as we look towards next season."  ~ Head Coach Todd Peters
