Laker Volleyball starts season with a sweep

In the home opener Wednesday night the Iowa Lakes Volleyball team faced off against Bethel JV. The Lakers swept the Royals 3-0. Though the energy was a little low to start the first set the with the Lakers squeaking passed the Royals 25-20, they came alive in the second set and defeated the Royals 25-15.

Coach Hunter had this to say, "'I'm glad we came out on top today! The team has been working extremely hard this preseason and it is great to see that pay off. It feels good to shake off the rust and to see our freshman let go of some nerves."

The Lakers offense, led by Brittany Butler, recorded  33 kills and just seven errors over the three set match.  Outside Hitter Hannah Seil and Middle Blocker Keyeria T both had outstanding freshman debuts, each earning 9 kills. Janya Johnson also had a heavy hitting performance recording 8 kills.

Coach Hunter commented about the offense "our setters and hitters are finally starting to connect.  Brittany does a good job running a faster tempo offense. The more game time swing we can get the more they will continue to improve. I was pleasantly surprised with our two kill leaders tonight."

The ILCC defense showed life and relentlessness during the match. Leading the charge on the back row was freshman Libero Faith Marroquin who scrapped up 18 digs paired with 4 aces.   Also contributing to the defense was returner Katie Kracht who earned 6 digs, 2 aces, and also 1 solo block!

Happy with the Laker defensive effort, Coach Hunter stated "the defense tonight did well. I am very eager to see how they match up against some of the heavy handed hitters in the ICCAC. It should be really fun to watch. My DS's don't back down."

The Lakers continue their season this weekend in Sugar Grove, IL at the Wabaunsee CC tournament.
