Iowa Lakes Grabs 2 wins on Saturday

The Iowa Lakes Volleyball team traveled to Davenport,IA to participate in the St. Ambrose JV tournament.

After a slow start on Friday, dropping two matches (0-2 loss to Blackhawk-Moline and 1-2 loss to St. Ambrose JV) the Lakers rallied back Saturday to take two wins. ILCC started the morning off playing Olivet were they won the first set 25-19. During the second set however, the Lakers would fall 19-25. During the must-win third set, the Lakers took an early with an offensive charge led by Brittany Butler and Krishonna Jones. Iowa Lakes walked away with the win 15-13.

In the second match of the day on Saturday, the Lakers swept Augustana College JV 3-0. The Lakers won with a collective offense from her Freshman hitters, Amber Walls, Janya Johnson, Krishonna Jones and Keyeria Tyeskie. Johnson also led the defense recording 15 digs. Also contributing to the Laker defense were Sophomore Katie Kracht and Freshman Evonne Tomlin both earning 8 digs during the match.

Other notable performances from the weekend came from the Laker wing defenders. Sophomore Brittany Butler had 90 assist with 23 digs during the two days of play. Freshmen Faith Marroquin and Micaela Cornelius split the Libero position this weekend and collectively recorded 50 digs.

Coach Hunter had this to say about the weekend performance, "Friday was rough and we did not play to our strengths or potential." She continued, "However, I was very impressed with the collective team rebound we had on Saturday. I finally felt that the girls were having fun and enjoying the system we are running. I think the light bulbs are finally going off for some of our key players and our role players are stepping up as well. I am very excited to see what's ahead!"

With these two wins Saturday, the Lakers move to 6-10 and pass the total wins from the 2017 season!

The Lakers travel to Marshalltown, IA on Monday to the face NJCAA D1 Marshalltown CC Tigers at 7pm.

The team will then have their first home match of the month on Wednesday September 12 vs. Ellsworth Community College. The Lakers will be having Neon night so dress accordingly as we "Light up the Panthers."
