Laker Volleyball Plays Final Fall Scrimmage at Southeastern CC

The Laker Volleyball team traveled to West Burlington to do their trick or treating. The Lakers played their final fall scrimmage for 2020 at Southeastern Community College and will now move to off-season conditioning until November 1st until wrapping up the fall on November 24th. They will resume practicing on January 5, 2021 and open the 2020-21 competitive season on January 24th at Southeastern CC.

Coach Mike Turnbull is proud of his squad for making it through POD training and Phases 1-3 this fall. "It has been an interesting and challenging fall and these young ladies have reached this point by being extremely resilient. First, we found out in August that the NJCAA was moving our season to the spring of 2021 and we would be allowed to practice and eventually have a few scrimmages. We scheduled three scrimmages and played two of them. COVID complications and protocols took our roster of 14 down to 9 and one more player had to go home a few weeks ago, so we have been operating with 9 for the past month and a half. We hope to add a couple more players to our roster at semester break. As far as the scrimmage at SECC goes, we traveled with 7 healthy players. We left one at home ill [non-COVID related]. We played the Hawks very well in the first two sets. In the second set we led 20-17 before falling 27-25. Disappointing, but a learning moment which was good. You have to finish anytime the opportunity presents itself. We had a player roll an ankle midway through the third set and finished the five- set scrimmage with six players. Kudos to those six. The middles had to pass and the defensive specialists had to hit. We handled the adversity okay but SECC did step up and take full advantage of the situation and stuck it to us pretty good. Gave us a great opportunity to see everyone play various roles on the floor which may be needed in the spring."

"For the most part I have been impressed with how our players and all the student-athletes have been dealing with everything this fall. It has been tough on them and the Iowa Lakes staff but we are doing well and looking forward to the spring semester and season. All our sports teams will be competing this spring beginning in January. It is going to be a fun and challenging ride for all of us and we are looking forward to it. It takes a village, so I am hoping fans will be able to come out and support these kids in some capacity."
