Instant Classic, as lakes come from 3 down to tie Reivers

In a match up of two of the top team in Iowa, and very likely the favorites for both D1 and D2 national titles, on a steamy night in Council Bluffs, a match that will live in the memories of anyone who watched occurred.

For about 20 minutes these two circled the ball around the pitch like two prize fighters sizing up the challenge. It was the Reivers team that landed the first punch, and it was almost a knock out one. Brian Lopez in the 21st minute, Hayato Takayama in the 25th, and Aron Martinez in the 26th minute each scored goals that sent the sun down and the Lakers reeling. The last 20 minutes of the half the Reivers team looked to put the game away. However, their where signs of life. At the half the score of 3-0 looked dominate, save for one detail, Jordy Rodriguez picked up a yellow card in both the 32nd minute and the 41st, meaning Iowa Western was going to half to play the second half with 10 men.

The 2nd half opened with new tactics on both sides. Iowa Lakes setting up to go for it, and Iowa Western to fill the space with one missing. In the 53rd minutes Garbhan Feeney got around his man on the left side and put in an inch perfect cross that was finished by Kasper Wollstein. Then again in the 68th minute Garbhan, known in Spencer as "Gee", got around his man again, and again delivered a perfect cross, this time finished by Haruya Higuchi. Then in the 79th minute Florent Lefebvre did his best Gee imitation setting up Renato Gonzalez with the game tieing goal. Just when you thought the script was written, Carlos Camara for the Reivers goes on a great individual run and scored in the 80th minute. Was this going to be a tragic moment of to little to late for the Lakers, no, Keiji Segiura found just enough energy taking people on into the Reivers penalty area, getting taken down, and having the spot be pointed at. Up steps Lander Barrio Gonzalez in the 82nd minute, he shots to his left, Iowa Westerns keeper dive in the same direction, and the ball slides just under his reach to bring the score to 4-4. The last 8 minutes has everyone on the edge and breathless. It was going to be a tie in th end, and these two Iowa giants would shake hands and wish one another good luck the rest of the way.

Iowa Lakes will take on Anoka-Ramsey at 1:00 PM in Spencer next, and Iowa Western will stay home for Wednesdays match against Western Nebraska.
