Iowa Lakes win Region 11 Championship

Iowa Lakes win Region 11 Championship

Iowa Lakes Community College lost its first match of the year ten days ago, to the same Northeast team. Now for the region 11 championship the #1 Northeast and #2 Iowa Lakes played a match to remember. In the first match, a 0-0 first half exploded with 5 goals, with Iowa Lakes taking 1-0, and 2-1 leads but Northeast winning 3-2. Last nights match had some similarities.

The first half was cagey, as the Lakers probed the Hawkes for an opener, that came from a corner kick in the 24th minute. The Hawks cleared the initial cross into the area, then Keiji Segiura won the second ball and sent it back to Shaiyon Johnson who put the ball into the back post, where Jeremy Koppe on his first touch put the ball into the side netting. In the first half the Lakers got 10 shots, and the Hawkes got 4. The score was 1-0, but that was not how it would stay.

The second half opened up with the Hawks pressing and playing on the front foot. 7 minutes into the half Edouard Nys cut across the area from his left side, stopped on a dime, and slotted in a goal with his left foot. Then just like the game 10 days ago the Lakes had an answer, this time on a free kick from the right side 42 yards out, Florent Lefebvre sent in a wonder cross to the back post finding a surging Anwar Yusif who headed the ball in. Again, like the last time the Hawks came back, this time Anwar got called for a hand ball giving up a penalty kick with just 16 minutes to play. Edouard stepped up and tied the game. With just under nine minutes to play a scramble in front of the Hawks net, resulted in some pushing and shoving and a red card to Anwar. Now the Lakes had to play a Man short. The Hawks came hard to finish the match, but the Lakers held on forcing overtime.

In the 20 minutes of overtime both teams had chances at scoring the golden goal, with the man up Hawkes getting more of the ball, the Lakes looks happy to get it to penalty kick shootout to decide the winner. So, up steps the Hawks Len Valkema who sends Louis Kruger the Laker keeper who did not play, but has come in for this moment, the wrong way and scored. Then Florent slammed one in upper 90 for the Lakers. Next Marius Elmose for the Hawks, this time Louis gets a fingertip to the ball and sends it off the post. For the Lakers Haruya Higuchi is next, puts it in to the keepers right. For the Hawks, Tobias Gerber, he puts it side netting to the keeper right. Now Lander Barrio Gonzalez, sends the keeper the wrong way and scores. Up steps, Lewis Rourke, who hits the cross bar and over. So, Kasper can win it for the Lakers with the next kick, and he does.

After the match Florent Lefebvre is awarded Defensive Player of the tournament, and Kasper Wollstein MVP of the tournament.

Next for the Lakers they will take on the Region 6/9 champion who is yet to be decided between Johnson County and Neosho County on Saturday, November 9th for the North Planes District championship and the automatic National Championship place.
