The Iowa Lakes men's soccer team has been selected as an at large bid to compete in the NJCAA DII National Tournament. The Lakers earn the 3 seed and will open up pool play on November 17th at 3:00pm vs 10th seeded Morton CC and November 19th at 3:00pm vs 6th seeded CCBC Essex.
"It's fantastic to be back at the National Tournament; this has been our goal all season," said Iowa Lakes head coach Ben MacRae. "Competing at this level requires a deep squad and staying as injury-free as possible, and we've been fortunate on both fronts." The team is optimistic about their draw and is focused on navigating their opponents strategically. "We are taking it one game at a time, ensuring we've thoroughly completed our scouting reports and done our due diligence to give ourselves the best chance to advance." Returning as last year's champions brings additional pressure, but the team remains confident and prepared. "Our players are ready, organized, and excited to step onto the field. We can't wait to give it our all."
MacRae is looking for several players to have a big impact at the tournament. Freshman Kasper Wollstein has scored 14 goals tallied 14 assists this season. Sophomore Haruya Higuchi has scored 19 goals and added 8 assists for the Lakers. Sophomore Garbhan Feeney has added 17 assists and 6 goals for the Lakers this season. Sophomore Shaiyon Johnson had 5 assists this season and has been a key piece for the Lakers with his leadership and knowledge of the game. Sophomore Rudhan Feeney will also be one to watch as the tournament progresses with his skills and leadership on and off the field.
The national tournament will take place at John Hunt Park in Huntsville, AL. Group play for Iowa Lakes will begin Sunday, November 17th at 3:00 pm and Tuesday, November 19th at 3:00 pm. One team from each group will continue to the next round.
