Laker Softball Drops Two to DMACC

#16 Iowa Lakes traveled to #9 Des Moines Area Community College Sunday, where the Lakers dropped both games. Iowa Lakes could only muster up five hits in their 13-1 loss in game one. The Lakers outhit the Bears in game two, but dropped the second game 3-2. The Lakers are now 25-10 overall and 10-6 in conference play.

Game One: ILCC 1, DMACC 13

The Bears opened up the game scoring six runs in the bottom of the first. They scored another five runs in the third and their final two runs in the fourth.

The Lakers got their lone run in the top of the fifth with a leadoff walk from Desiree Lopez. Sullwold singled to left field and Lauren Hein walked. Leilani San Pedro forced Lopez out at home on a ground ball to the first baseman, but Sullwold scored on the next pitch due to a passed ball.

Courtney Calkins (12-3) took the loss for the Lakers. She allowed eleven earned runs on fourteen hits in three innings. Kaitlyn Bowman did not give up a hit in her one inning of work. Julia Sullwold led the Lakers going 2-3 at the plate. She also scored the lone run for the Lakers.

Game Two: ILCC 2, DMACC 3

The Bears again jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first. They scored two runs on three hits. Courtney Calkins responded in the top of the second with a leadoff homerun to center to put the Lakers down 2-1.

DMACC scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the third on two hits. Neither team scored until the Lakers scored one in the top of the seventh. Lauren hit a one out homerun to make the score 3-2. Leilani San Pedro followed with a single and advanced to second on a Deanna Gerrard ground ball to the pitcher. Shelby Davis hit a line drive down the first base line that the first baseman tipped towards the second baseman to record the final out of the game.

Ashton Kazmierski (11-5) took the loss for the Lakers. She allowed three earned runs on seven hits, while striking out two batters. Leilani San Pedro led the Lakers at the plate going 3-4. Lauren Hein was 2-4 with a homerun and Courtney Calkins homered as well.

The Lakers will be at home this Tuesday, April 11th, at 3:00 and 5:00 PM to take on Morningside College JV.
