Laker Softball Splits With D1 Marshalltown

Iowa Lakes Community College Softball team finally played on their home field Tuesday against Marshalltown Community College. They took game one 5-2 before losing game two 11-10. The Lakers are now 15-23 and 5-11 in conference. They will play at home again tomorrow, April 25th, at 2:00 and 4:00 PM against Iowa Central Community College.

Game One: ILCC 5, MCC 2

Yasmine Nix pitched a gem for the Lakers in game one. She was effective, throwing just 78 pitches in seven innings. She allowed 2 runs on ten hits and one walk. Nix was also 2-3 at the plate.

Nix shut down the Tigers in the first two innings, before the Lakers put up any runs. Nix hit a one out single before being forced out at second from a Kenlee Frank ground ball. Emily Owen walked before Lexi Pallisco blasted a ball over the centerfield fence to put the Lakers up 3-0.

Marshalltown scored one run in the top of the third, stringing together four singles. Iowa Lakes quickly got that run back in their half of the inning when Leilani San Pedro hit a one out single. San Pedro then stole second before coming around to score on a Kacie Salazar single.

The Tigers proceeded to score one run in the top of the fourth on a leadoff walk and two hits.

Iowa Lakes scored the final run of the game in the top of the fifth. Sullwold led off with a single. She was forced out at second by a ground ball from San Pedro, but San Pedro put herself in scoring position by stealing second base. Salazar again came up clutch for the Lakers, scoring San Pedro on a single to left field.

Kacie Salazar led the offense for the Lakers. She was 2-3 with two runs batted in. Julia Sullwold was also 2-3, while Lexi Pallisco homered and batted in three runs.

Game Two: MCC 11, ILCC 10

Marshalltown came out aggressive in game two, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. Naomi Tolmachoff allowed four runs on three hits and two walks. The Lakers showed some toughness, scoring four runs of their own in the bottom of the first. Sullwold and Lopez each singled before both scored on a San Pedro double. Salazar then drove the first strike she saw over the left field fence to make the score 4-4.

The Tigers put up another three runs in the top of the second inning on four hits and one walk. The Lakers were held scoreless in the bottom of the second.

Marshalltown again put up runs in the third inning. They scored two runs on one hit, one walk, and one Laker error. Kaitlin Walsh homered to ignite the Laker offense in the bottom of the third. Owen followed with a single before she was forced out at second by Gabby Heckard. Jerica Walters was hit by a pitch before both her and Heckard stole a base to put Lakers at second and third. Sullwold doubled to the left center gap to bring to score to 9-7. Lopez followed with a single, that scored Sullwold and brought the Lakers within one.

The Tigers responded in the top of the fourth, scoring one run on one walk, one error, and one hit. The Lakers went down 1,2,3 in their half of the inning.

Iowa Lakes held Marshalltown scoreless in the top of the fifth, while scoring one run of their own. Heckard and Walters both singled before Heckard advanced to third on a Pallisco sacrifice fly. Sullwold singled to score Heckard before the Tigers got the final Laker to retire.

Marshalltown loaded the bases in the top of the sixth, but Sullwold got the final Tiger batter to groundout to Lopez. They used that momentum to score one run in the bottom of the sixth inning by another homerun from Walsh.

With the game tied, Marshalltown loaded the bases and scored one run in the top of the seventh. Iowa Lakes got one runner on in the bottom of the seventh, but could not get the runner around to score.

Naomi Tolmachoff took the loss for the Lakers. She allowed five runs on three hits, and three walks. Julia Sullwold pitched five innings, allowing five runs, two earned, on nine hits, three walks, and three strikeouts. Bibiana Rosales pitched the final inning of the game. She allowed one unearned run on one hit and one walk.

Kaitlin Walsh was 2-3, with two homeruns, two runs scored, and two runs batted in. Julia Sullwold was 3-5 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Desiree Lopez, Kacie Salazar, and Emily Owen were each 2-4 in the game.
