Laker Softball Wins Two at Home

Iowa Lakes Community College Softball team won two games over Iowa Central Community College on Wednesday. Yasmine Nix picked up the 5-3 game one victory and Julia Sullwold picked up the 6-5 game two win. The Lakers are now 17-23 and 7-11 in conference.

Game One: ILCC 5, ICCC 3

Yasmine Nix started the game off great, getting the first three Triton hitters out. The Lakers then scored in their half of the inning, thanks to a one out single from Desiree Lopez. Leilani San Pedro then hit a hard ground ball up the middle that was misplayed by the centerfielder that brought Lopez around to score from first and put the Lakers on the board.

Both teams were held scoreless until Iowa Central scored one run in the top of the third off a solo homerun. The Lakers quickly responded in their half of the inning. Lexi Pallisco led off with a walk before Sullwold and San Pedro reached on Triton errors. Kacie Salazar then opened up the game with a grand slam over the left field fence to put the Lakers up 5-1.

The Tritons took advantage of a Laker error to score one run in the top of the fourth. Iowa Central scored their final run of the game on a solo homerun in the top of the sixth to complete the 5-3 Laker victory.

Yasmine Nix allowed three earned run on four hits, three walks, and striking out two. Kacie Salazar was 1-3 at the plate with a grandslam. Desiree Lopez was 2-3 with two runs scored, while Kaitlin Walsh and Leilani San Pedro each had a hit in the game.

Game Two: ILCC 6, ICCC 5

Iowa Central took the early lead in game two when their leadoff walk came around to score on a Laker error. Iowa Lakes took the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Lopez singled and came around to score on a San Pedro double. San Pedro was caught trying to advance to third to bring Salazar up with two outs. She proceeded to drive a pitch over the centerfield fence to put the Lakers up 2-1. Walsh then followed with a single, before scoring on a Nix double.

The Tritons scored another run in the top of the second with back to back doubles to make the score 3-2 in favor of the Lakers.

Iowa Lakes put together a two our rally in the bottom of the fourth to score another run. Emily Owen led off the inning with a single, before the Tritons got the next two Lakers to strikeout. Owen put herself in scoring position, by stealing second. Sullwold then singled to third base, before Lopez lined a ball to left to score Owen.

The Lakers scored their final two runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth, courtesy of a Nix two run homerun.

Iowa Central made things interesting in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs.  They had two quick singles, before their third batter hit a homerun to bring the Tritons within one. Nix and the defense buckled down though, getting the first out on a groundout to Lopez, before Nix got the next two batters on her own.

Julia Sullwold pitched the first five innings for the Lakers. She allowed two runs, one earned on five hits, three walks, and one strikeout. Yasmine Nix pitched the final two runs, allowing three earned runs on four hits, one walk, and striking out two. Yasmine Nix was 2-3 at the plate with one run scored, two runs batted in, and a homerun. Kaitlin Walsh was also 2-3 with two runs scored. Julia Sullwold and Desiree Lopez were each 2-4 in the game.

The Lakers will again be at home on Friday, April 27th, at 2:00 and 4:00 PM to take on North Iowa Area Community College.
