Lakers Blast Seven Homeruns for a Sweep 

The Iowa Lakes Community College Softball team opened up the 2023 season with two wins. The Lakers beat Southeast Community College 13-0 in five innings and 16-5 in six innings. The Lakers are a perfect 2-0 on the season. 

GAME 1: 13 (ILCC), 0 (SCC) 5 innings 

The Lakers got on the board early with back-to-back homeruns in the first inning. Bryn Bohmann was the first to see the ball go over the fence, but MacKenna Jones followed right after with one for herself. With two outs, Karisa Hernandez singled and scored on a Paige Grafton double down the line. Jones was then money on the mound striking out three batters in the inning.

The Lakers were held scoreless in the second inning, but three more runs in the third. Bohmann led off the inning with a single. Jones and Baylee O'Donnell followed with singles of their own. Bohmann scored on the play. Grafton then cleared the bases with her second double of the game to put the Lakers up 6-0. 

Jones started the fifth inning with a double; she then advanced to third on an O'Donnell single. Hernandez got her second hit of the game, scoring Jones and advancing O'Donnell to third. Sydnee Swiggum stepped up in her first at bat of the game and drove a ball to left, scoring O'Donnell and advancing Hernandez to second. A sacrifice fly by Olivia Funk advanced Hernandez to third, before she scored on a Kiaya Dunbar single. Back-to-back errors by the Storm allowed two more Laker runs to cross the plate. Bohmann then picked up her second RBI with a sacrifice fly. The final run of the game came off a double by Madison Goosmann

MacKenna Jones was nearly perfect on the mound. She allowed zero runs on one hit, one walk, and thirteen strikeouts. Jones struck out every batter but two in the game, to pick up her first win of the year. Jones also led the Lakers at the plate, going 3-3 with three runs scored. Bryn Bohmann, Baylee O'Donnell, Karisa Hernandez, and Paige Grafton all had multi-hit games for the Lakers.    

 

GAME 2: 16 (ILCC), 5 (ECC) 6 innings 

Iowa Lakes got on the board in game two, much like they did in game one. Swiggum, Funk, and Alderson each hit a homerun in the second inning to put the Lakers up 3-0. With two outs, Thorson singled and advanced to third on a double from Bohmann. Both players scored on a Jones single. 

With the Lakers up 5-0 in the third, Alderson doubled and Thorson walked to bring up Bohmann. She hit her second homerun of the game over the right field fence to make the score 9-0. Southeast scored their first run of the day on a homerun in the bottom of the inning. This was followed by a double and a Laker error to make the score 9-2. 

Both teams were held scoreless in the fourth inning. Dunbar led off the fifth with a double. An Alderson single advanced Dunbar to third and a Thorson sacrifice fly allowed Dunbar to cross the plate. Alderson then used her speed to steal both second and third and scored on a Bohmann single. Jones picked up another RBI on a double, scoring Bohmann. The Storm put two more runs up on the board off two walks and two singles. 

Swiggum led off the top of the sixth with her second homerun of the game. Dunbar singled and stole second, before scoring on an Alderson single. Thorson followed with a single to put runners at first and second. Bohmann doubled and Jones singled to put the Lakers up 16-4. Southeast scored one in the bottom of the sixth on a hit by pitch, error, walk, and single. 

Baylee O'Donnell picked up the win for the Lakers, going 4.1 innings. She allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits, one walk, and five strikeouts. Jayda Staige pitched 1.2 innings, allowing two runs, one earned on four hits, two walks, and one strikeout. Bryn Bohmann was a perfect 5-5 at the plate with three runs scored and five runs batted in. Macy Alderson was also 4-4 with four runs scored, three runs batted in, and two stolen bases.  

Iowa Lakes will play another double header against Southeast Community College tomorrow, March 4th. Games will be in Beatrice, NE at 12:00 and 2:00 PM.
