Laker Softball Splits with Panthers

The Iowa Lakes Community College Softball team split with Ellsworth Community College today. The Panthers took game one 9-5, before the Lakers rallied to win 10-2 in 5 innings for game two. The Lakers are now 10-14 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

GAME 1: 9 (ECC), 5 (ILCC)

The Panthers got on the board first, scoring one run in the bottom of the first. This was done on two singles and a walk.

Iowa Lakes rallied right back, when Ally Davis reached on a one out single up the middle. Macy Alderson then hit a line drive over the centerfield fence to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead. Ellsworth battled right back, regaining the lead in their half of the inning. They scored three runs on a hit by pitch, walk, single, and wild pitch.

Ellsworth was able to extend their lead by scoring one unearned run in the third.

In the fifth, Madison Goosmann drew a one out walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. She then scampered home when Macy Alderson doubled. The Panthers scored another two runs on two hits, a walk, and a fielder's choice in the bottom of the fourth.

Brooklyn Bode led off the fifth with a walk. She then advanced to second on a wild pitch and sored on Myla Murphy's single up the middle.

The bottom of the sixth saw the Panthers score another two runs on a walk and two singles.

Brooklyn Bode tried to rally the Lakers in the seventh when she led off the inning with a solo homerun. Unfortunately, the Lakers could not get anything else offensively after that.

Macy Alderson led the Lakers at the plate, going 2-3 with three runs batted in. Myla Murphy also added two hits in the game. Jolene Jordahl suffered the loss, throwing three innings and allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits, three walks, one hit by pitch, and striking out one. Taylor Larson threw the final three innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits, three walks, and striking out one.

GAME 2: 10 (ILCC), 2 (ECC) 5 innings

The Lakers looked like a completely different team in game two. The game started with back-to-back singles by Burgess and Murphy. Larson then drew a one out walk to load the bases, and then Goosmann took a walk of her own to score a run in the first.

Macy Alderson began the second with a hit by pitch, she then stole second and advanced to third on a groundout from Alayna Leighton. With two outs, Burgess got her second hit of the game, this time a double to left center to score Alderson. She did not stay at second long, as she stole third and then scored on a wild pitch to give the Lakers a 3-0 lead.

Iowa Lakes was able to get the leadoff batter on for the third inning in a row, when Larson doubled over the right fielder's head. She then scored on a single up the middle off the bat of Goosmann. A groundout and strikeout advanced Goosmann to second and brought up Leighton with two outs. She squeezed one through the infield to put runners on the corners. Bode then stepped up and singled to left to put the Lakers up 5-0. The Lakers got into a little jam in the bottom of the inning. Larson was able to get two quick outs, but then gave up two singles and a Laker error loaded the bases. She was able to get the final Panther out of the inning chasing on a change up to get out of the inning.

Murphy led off the fourth with an infield single. She then stole second and scored on Katelyn Hamm's line drive double to left center. Larson quickly followed with a single to score Hamm. With the Lakers up 7-0 and Goosmann on first, Davis drew a one out walk to put Goosmann in scoring position. Leighton stepped up and also hit an infield single and then both Larson and Davis scored on a Panther error. Bode then drove the first pitch she saw down the left field line for a triple, scoring Leighton for the final Laker run of the game.

Ellsworth put up a fight in the fifth when their leadoff batter reached on a double to left. A groundout to Tatiyana Schack and fly out to Hamm brought the Panther down to their final out. They singled, walked, and reached on an error before Larson stopped the rally with a strikeout to complete the 10-2 five inning win.

Taylor Larson earned the win, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits and one walk, while striking out four Panthers. Madison Goosmann and Brooklyn Bode were each 2-3 with two runs batted in. Abby Burgess, Myla Murphy, Taylor Larson, and Alayna Leighton each added two hits in the game as well.

The Lakers are back in action, when they travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Wednesday, April 3rd to take on conference foe Kirkwood Community College. Games are 2:00 and 4:00 PM that day.
