Iowa Lakes Softball Takes One from Hawkeye

The Iowa Lakes Community College Softball team went 1-1 on the day against Hawkeye Community College. The Lakers lost the first game 18-5 and then won game two 5-2. The Lakers are now 11-19 overall and 2-8 in conference play.

GAME 1: 18 (HCC), 5 (ILCC)

Hawkeye came out with confidence in the box, scoring two runs in the first inning. They did this on a walk and a homerun. The Lakers were able to score a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning when Myla Murphy singled up the middle. She then stole second and third, before scoring on Taylor Larson's single to center.

 The Redtails extended their lead, scoring six runs in the second on one walk, six hits, a dropped third strike, and a sacrifice fly. They extended their lead in the third, scoring on five hits and giving themselves a 12-1 lead.

Abby Burgess drove a ball over the left field fence in the third inning. Hawkeye quickly got that run back with a solo homerun of their own in the top of the fourth.

With the Lakers down 13-2, Larson led off the bottom of the fourth with a single and then scored on an Ally Davis homerun. Alderson followed Davis, driving the first pitch she saw over the fence as well.

Hawkeye quickly shutdown the Lakers rally by putting up another five runs in the fifth on four hits and a walk.

Taylor Larson was the leader for the Lakers at the plate. She was 2-2 with one run scored and a run batted in. Larson also suffered the loss in the circle. She pitched 2 innings, allowing ten runs, nine earned, on ten hits, four walks, and three strikeouts. Tatiyana Schack pitched 3 innings, allowing eight runs, seven earned, on nine hits, one walk, and two strikeouts.

GAME 2: 5 (ILCC), 2 (HCC)

Although Hawkeye scored a run in the first on a single and double, the Lakers responded well. Burgess led off the inning with a single and then stole second. She then advanced to third on a passed ball and scampered home on a sacrifice fly from Larson. Davis then hit her second homerun of the day to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead.

Iowa Lakes put another run on the scoreboard in the second. Katelyn Hamm got a one out single. She advanced to second on a groundout from Avery Somers. Hamm then stole third and scored on a passed ball.

The score remained 3-1 until the bottom of the fourth. Hamm again got a one out single and advanced to second on a Somers single to left. Both runners advanced 60 feet when Alayna Leighton walked and then Hamm hustled home on a passed ball.

The Redtails scored their final run of the game in the fifth on two doubles and a walk. Iowa Lakes responded in their half of the inning with a run of their own. Murphy singled and then advanced to second on a passed ball. She then tagged up on a fly ball to right off the bat of Larson and scored on a sacrifice fly from Davis to complete the 5-2 victory.

Taylor Larson picked up the win in game two, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and one walk, while striking out nine. Katelyn Hamm was 2-3 with two runs scored, while Ally Davis was 1-2 with a sacrifice fly and two runs batted in.

Iowa Lakes will continue their homestand with a conference double header to North Iowa Area Community College at 2:00 and 4:00 PM on Wednesday, April 10th.
