Laker Softball Winning Streak Continues

The Iowa Lakes Community College Softball continued their four-game winning streak with a sweep over Northeast Community College. The Lakers combined for 29 hits on the day for the 4-0 game one win and 19-6 game two win. Iowa Lakes is now 17-27 overall and 8-6 in conference play.

GAME 1: 4 (ILCC), 0 (NCC)

It took until the top of the third for either team to get on the board. Burgess led off the inning with a single and then stole second. Myla Murphy followed with a single of her own to score Burgess from second. Murphy followed suit and stole second before scampering home on a Taylor Larson single up the middle.

The Lakers scored another two runs in the sixth when Murphy reached on a single and then advanced to third on a throwing error. Larson drove in her second run of the game on a single down the right field line. Larson advanced to second on a line drive single from Katelyn Hamm and then scored on Macy Alderson's single to center.

Jolene Jordahl pitched her first career shutout allowing just three hits in seven innings. She walked five and struck out five in the game as well. Myla Murphy was 3-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases. Taylor Larson, Katelyn Hamm, and Macy Alderson each added two hits in the game.

GAME 2: 19 (ILCC), 6 (NCC) 5 innings

The Hawks were able to take their first and only lead of the day in the first inning of game two. They did this on a leadoff walk, fielder's choice, Iowa Lakes error, and sacrifice fly.

Alderson was not going to let Northeast lead last long. She reached first after getting hit by a pitch. She was on the move with the pitch, allowing her to advance to third on Ally Davis' single to right. Alexis Cullinane then stepped in and hit the Lakers first homerun of the game to give them a 3-1 lead. With one out, Brooklyn Bode doubled to left center and then advanced to third on a passed ball. Three straight walks to Burgess, Murphy, and Larson pushed Davis home to add another run to the lead. With the bases still loaded, Hamm hit a sacrifice fly to score Burgess. An Alderson single and Davis homerun cleared the bases and put the Lakers up 9-1. The Hawks scored one run in the bottom half of the inning on a triple, walk, and single.

Back-to-back singles from Larson and Hamm to lead off the fourth got the offense going again for the Lakers. With one out and Larson at third, Davis singled and Larson scored on a Hawks error. A groundout from Cullinane then scored Hamm to make the score 11-2. The Hawks gained some momentum in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs on three singles, one walk, one error, and one passed ball.

Iowa Lakes quickly shut down any hope the Hawks had to come back, scoring eight runs in the top of the fifth. Bode started the inning with a single. Burgess then doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Larson drove in her fourth run of the day on a single up the middle. Hamm followed with another sacrifice fly to score Burgess and put the Lakers up 13-6. Alderson walked to advance Larson to second, before both runners scored on Davis' double to left center. Cullinane followed with a single, scoring Davis and keeping the two out rally going. A Madison Goosmann single was followed by a Bode triple to score two more runs for the Lakers. The final run came when the Hawks attempted to pick Bode off of third but threw the ball into left field. Larson and the defense put the Hawks down in order in the fifth on a groundout to Hamm and two strikeouts.

Ally Davis was 4-4 with five runs batted in and three runs scored. Brooklyn Bode was also 4-4 with three runs scored, while Alexis Cullinane was 2-4 with five runs batted in Taylor Larson and Abby Burgess each added two hits in the game as well. Larson earned the win, allowing six runs, four earned, on six hits, three walks, and striking out four.

Iowa Lakes will be back at home for the final weekend of games. They will honor their sophomores on Saturday, April 27th. Games times will be at 1:00 and 3:00 PM against Ellsworth Community College.
