Iowa Lakes Community College will begin its inaugural season of sports shooting.  Iowa Lakes will compete in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference against nine teams.  The  competitive season is split between the fall and spring, playing about 2 months in each.

Sports shooting is co-ed and the Iowa Lakes roster consists of 3 women and 15 men. The team has been practicing at the Palo Alto Gun Club at Sportsmen's Park near Cylinder, IA. Early front runners for the Lakers include Thomas Kotewa, Wyatt Tuttle, Thomas CroColl, and Raeann Krull.  Coach Rick Kalsow had this to say about the team, "We have some really fine shots.  Excited to get this thing rolling and see how we can compete."

The ILCC Sports Shooting Team will shoot in their first competition vs. SWCC at the High Lakes Shooting Range near Creston, IA on Saturday, September 15, 2018.  The first home shoot will be vs. Iowa Western at the Palo Alto Gun Club on September 29, 2018 starting at 11:00 am.

Trap shooting  is an Olympic event for both men and women.  The American version involves shooting clay targets that are 4  5/16" in diameter that are thrown at unknown angles at a speed of 42 mph with a shotgun. A 12 gauge chamber is the largest allowed. One shot is fired at each target in the singles event, or 16 yard event, as the shooters shoot from a distance of 16 yards behind the trap. The heaviest load allowed is 1 1/8 ounces of #7 ½ shot.  The winner of the meet is the team with the most targets scored "dead" out of 500 targets. There are also individual medals for the top 3 women and the top 3 men in 100 target 16 yard event.
