Lakers win final non-conference game of the season

The Lakers overcame a strong 2nd half from Grand View to move to 14-2 on the season.

The Lakers got off to an early start in a fast-paced game with a 24-18 lead after the first quarter. They stayed strong in the second quarter to extend the lead to 45-31 at halftime. The beginning of the second half however, the Lakers were plagued by foul trouble.

Early defensive struggles sent the Vikings to the line repeatedly throughout the thrist quarter. Grandview outscored Iowa Lakes 26-19 in the third quarter to close the gap to 7 points going into the fourth quarter.

The game remained tight for the final ten minutes. The Lakers showed great toughness by getting defensive stops at crucial times. The Vikings were able to bring it to a one possession game multiple times in the fourth quarter but the Lakers never relinquished the lead.

The Lakers were led by Breanna Wendland with 34 points, Shareece Smith added 24 points, and Samantha Hagedorn added 12 points.

"So proud of our team tonight. This is a very good road win in a tough environment. We got into foul trouble and we had kids step up and make plays. It was a team effort tonight and this will help us moving into conference play. I thought our team showed composure tonight and dug in on the defensive end. Excited to get back to conference play on Saturday at DMACC. Will be a fun 2nd semester with this team," commented Head Coach Ashley Martin.

The Lakers are 14-2 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. The Lakers return to conference play Saturday, January 12th when they travel to Boone, IA to take on DMACC at 1:00pm.
