Lakers end regular season with a win

The Lakers Women's Soccer team ended their regular season with a 6-1 conference win over NIACC.

Coming into the game, the Lakers were determined to dominate and they did just that. In the first half, the Lakers notched 2 goals to place them above on the board. Tessa Calabria scored the first goal off a free kick that drilled to the net and the keeper could not stop it. The second goal came off a corner taken by Celeste Diaz where Mayra Piedrahita would hit the ball off a rebound straight into the net. There was a total of 8 shots in the first half and keeper Adelle Brown recorded 6 saves for the half.

Going into the second half, the Lakers were even more hungry for goals. The third goal came from Sienna Scully off the assist of Madeleine Duncan. Sienna would strike again with a beautiful ball played straight across the Trojans defense by Ana Lima, where Sienna placed it perfectly through the keeper.

The Trojans managed to get a shot late in the second half that would sink right above Adelle's hands and into the net, giving the Trojans their only goal of the game.

Tessa answered back with another goal less than a minute later off a pass from Maddy but she wasn't finished yet; from a well-placed cross by Jordyn Howell, Tessa got her foot on the ball and drilled a shot, hitting crossbar then straight into the net. That would-be Tessa's third goal of the game. There was a total of 9 shots in the second half and Adelle recorded 3 saves of the half.

Tonight, was also Sophomore night for the Lakers. Iowa Lakes will be graduating 8 sophomores, Celeste, Tessa, Ana, Yecenia Sanchez, Maddy, Kylie Wellard, Sienna and Jordyn.

"Thought the girls played really well today, we came together as a team and got the win. We look forward to next week, as we prepare for regionals. I am also incredibly proud of our sophomores and all the hard work they put in their time here. They will all be missed and we wish them nothing but the best in their future!" Said Viedenkamp.

The Lakers ended their regular season with a 6-7-2 record and a 3-4-1 in conference play.

This was a must win game for the Lakers in order for them to make it into their regional playoffs. With their win, it placed them in 6th place where they will face the number 3 seed. The Lakers will travel to the number 3rd seed home pitch on October 29. Winner will play the 2nd seed and advance to the semifinals.
