Year 2 of the Women's Wrestling program is off and running as they made history tonight with an 24-14 dual victory over NIACC.
The Lakers, who are Ranked 10th in the preseason poll, took 4 of the 7 contested matches, with contributions up and down the lineup, Coach Corey Muniz was beyond pleased with the ladies efforts. "This is what it's all about right! Putting your foot on the line and giving it all you got in front of a home crowd is always a fun experience." Said Muniz, "But hey, we came ready for a fight. Even the matches that we dropped were contested well and we are excited to get back to work!"
The dual saw some familiar faces getting some unfamiliar results.
Both Kylie Hessenius and Isabel Jues, were returners in the line up that traversed through their first season without a victory in a dual meet. It was a different story tonight however.
Hessenius opened the dual with the first contested match of the night at 117 pounds. At the break, she was leading 4-2, but it only took her 35 seconds into the second period to earn the fall and push the team score to 10-0.
After a double forfeit at 124 pounds, Jues grinded out a match of her own. Going the distance in a 9-1 decision victory at 131 pounds.
"Proud of those two, the have worked for well over a year and stuck through all the adversity they have faced along the way. The earned and deserved those wins tonight" said Muniz.
It didn't stop there, as the Lakers earned victories from both Willow Stewart and Keyahna Phillips.
