The Iowa Lakes Baseball program opened up the 2018 season in Pratt, Kansas against the Pratt Community College Beavers. The Lakers lost the first game 13-5 but not before the fire works started in first inning when sophomore catcher, Tavan Shahidi (Ames, Iowa) gave the Lakers an early 3-0 lead with a homerun to dead center. Evan Sankey (Appleton, Wisconsin) was given the nod in the opener and took control early on in the game with the three run cushion holding the Beavers to only 1 through the 2nd inning. The Beavers answered by scoring 7 runs in the third and 4 runs in the fifth while adding single runs in the second and sixth innings respectively, making the score 12-3 through five innings. The Lakers would tack on runs in the sixth and seventh that would include a sole homerun by Chad Hinkle (Rosemount, Minnesota) in the seventh inning to bring the score to 13-5.

Game 1 saw Laker hitters have a combined total of 9 hits including four hitters with a multi-hit game.

In Game 2, Martin Eckard (Victoria, British Columbia) got the start on the mound and pitched well through two innings and was given an early lead which included another homerun from Shahidi in the second inning, this one of the solo variety. Jayden Adrians (Green Bay, Wisconsin) would double in the second inning as well and brought home by Noah Catron (Praire City, Iowa) on a single, giving Iowa Lakes the lead, 2-1, through two innings. Pratt Community College would answer back with 6 runs in the third to give them the lead 7-2. The Lakers chipped away the deficet with a run in the fourth on a solo homerun by Ashtin Moxey (Nassua, Bahamas) and a 3-run inning in the fifth which included a 2-run homerun by Mallard Holland (Tampa, Florida). Through four and a half innings, the Lakers trailed 7-6. In the bottom of the fifth, the Beavers took control of the game by scoring 8 runs as well as single runs in the sixth and eighth innings. The Lakers would add another run in the sixth to bring the final score to 17-7.
